Corruption won't cut it: what to do when someone demands a bribe from you
Corruption is a multifaceted phenomenon that can poison almost any area of human life. In Ukraine, corruption is fought against by specially created state bodies, as well as public organizations and just some concerned citizens.
On December 9, the world celebrates International Anti-Corruption Day. Rubryka decided to analyze what everyone needs to know to fight and what to do if teachers, managers, officials, doctors, police, or anyone else demands a bribe from you.
What is the problem?
Not just a phenomenon, but a complex crime
Corruption is varied. You may be asked for money for a good grade, a new position, failure to report for speeding, proper treatment, and more. You're not responsible for other people's actions, but you must remember that offering, promising, or giving a bribe is as illegal as taking it. This is determined by Article 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and provides for a fine of 8,500 to 12,750 hryvnias or restriction or imprisonment for two to four years.
If someone tries to involve you in a corruption crime, it is better to refuse immediately. Better yet, hold the perpetrators accountable. If an official is caught taking a bribe, they will be tried under Article 368 of the Criminal Code, which can result in a fine of 17,000 to 25,500 hryvnias, restriction or imprisonment of two to four years, deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or activities for up to three years.
