A kidney transplant surgery was performed for the first time in Zhytomyr region
In the regional hospital named after O. Herbachevskyi, a kidney transplant surgery was performed for the first time. A unique operation for the Zhytomyr region was performed in the Department of Cardiac Surgery and Organ and Tissue Transplantation.
The press service of the Zhytomyr regional council informs about it, Rubryka reports.
According to the hospital executive officer, Bohdan Leskiv, the kidney transplant operation was performed on Monday, June 21. It was a double operation to transplant a donor kidney from a related donor, or rather from father to son. Two teams of surgeons were involved in the operation, which lasted more than 8 hours.
"Our doctors have been trained for 6 months, received a transplant certificate, were present at similar operations. Funding for the operation was fully provided by the regional hospital, it's more than UAH 300 thousand. And in the future, we guarantee that all transplants taking place in the regional hospitals will be free for patients," Bohdan Leskiv stressed.
The hospital is already thinking about expanding opportunities, has prepared design and estimation documentation for another new operating room.
"We've pursued this goal for a year and a half. It wasn't an easy road. We had to get a transplant license, get a Cabinet resolution, sign a contract with the Ministry of Health. We passed it all. We were ready to have the first operation in the hospital in January-February, however, due to the escalation of the pandemic, we were forced to postpone it," Bohdan Leskiv said.
Leskiv stressed that the financing of the operation was fully carried out by the regional hospital, which is more than UAH 300,000.
"And in the future, we guarantee that all transplantations taking place in the regional hospital will be free for patients," the hospital director said.
The department where the operation was performed will now have a double workload. In addition to treating patients with kidney disease and in need of treatment, patients will be treated and prepared for kidney transplantation.
"Zhytomyr Regional State Administration is implementing a step-by-step plan to create a modern medical institution based on the regional hospital, capable of providing multidisciplinary medical services at a high level. This year the hospital is included in the President's "Big Construction" program. Because of this, the renovated nephrology department will soon be joined by reconstructed rooms of the anesthesiology and intensive care unit for postoperative patients, the neurology department with neuro-reanimation. This once again confirms that the development of the network of medical institutions is one of the major priorities for the regional authorities and the state leadership," Vitalii Bunechko, the head of the Zhytomyr Regional State Administration, stated.
