Ukraine wants to join US-Germany talks on Nord Stream 2

Nord Stream-2

Ukraine has asked Berlin to be joined to the US-German talks on the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project, which is extremely dangerous for it.

The Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Andrii Melnyk stated this in a comment for the newspaper Die Welt.

"Nord Stream-2 is a blow to the very heart of Ukraine: both from an economic point of view and, above all, from a security point of view. That is why we are seeking our participation in the US-German talks on this extremely dangerous project, we should sit at the same table with them and have the right to vote," the ambassador said.

He added that the Ukrainian party "requested the federal government" on Tuesday.

"It would be an absolute disaster, first, for mutual trust, if this deal between Berlin and Washington is achieved at the expense of Ukraine," Melnyk said.

Earlier it became known that on the eve of the first visit of US President Joseph Biden to Europe, German Chancellor Angela Merkel sent a team of her closest advisers to Washington. One of the topics for negotiations will be the future of Nord Stream-2.

The issue of this project and the risks it poses to Ukraine were already discussed on June 2 during a meeting between US President's National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and German Chancellor's foreign policy adviser Jan Hecker.

At a meeting with a delegation of the US Congress on Wednesday, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi discussed opposition to implementing Russia's Nord Stream-2 geopolitical project.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said in an interview with the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that he saw similarities between the construction of the Nord Stream-2 project and Russia's illegal occupation of Crimea and believed that Russia would use the pipeline as a lever to achieve its interests in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
