Today, on November 28, with the onset of darkness in many Ukrainian homes, electric lights will go out, and the windows will glow with flickering defenseless lights—candles of remembrance. They're signs of mourning for the millions of lost lives, victims of one of the worst 20th century crimes addressed to the entire nation—the Holodomor.
Every year, on the fourth Saturday of November, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance calls on all Ukrainians to join the nationwide minute of silence, if possible, near the memorial, or monument or cross in memory of the Holodomor victims in your city or village. Light a candle at home or at work and place it on the windowsill so that its light was visible from the street, in memory of those who died from the famine artificially created by the communist authorities.
