President Volodymyr Zelenskyi stated that following a meeting with a US special envoy and discussions on peace and negotiations, Russian troops attacked Kyiv with three waves of ballistic strikes, using 21 missiles.

The shelling killed at least two people and injured 34 others, including five children, the head of state shared on social media, according to Rubryka.

As the president noted, the shelling of the capital caused widespread destruction. The strikes hit:

  • Residential buildings
  • Energy facilities
  • Infrastructure at a train station and the subway
  • Shopping centers
  • Businesses

Damaged sites also include a monastery.

"Russian 'humanists' launched three waves of ballistic strikes on Kyiv starting in the evening. They used 21 missiles. Unfortunately, the city suffered a significant number of hits and damages," Zelenskyi wrote.

Additionally, Russian forces attacked 12 regions of Ukraine overnight.

"In Kyiv and across the regions, 34 people sustained injuries, including five children. As of now, two deaths have been confirmed," the head of state reported.

The president drew attention to the fact that the massive missile attack occurred right after a meeting with the US special envoy and discussions regarding peace and the negotiation process.

He described the strike as indicative.

"This means there are no real changes in its attitude toward everything that is happening," Zelenskyi noted.

He also emphasized that Ukraine must continue seeking solutions to end the war. At the same time, according to the president, Russian missile strikes following negotiations necessitate increased pressure on Moscow.

Background

On October 21 in Saint Petersburg, Steve Witkoff, Special Envoy of US President Donald Trump, met with Vladimir Putin. The negotiations lasted approximately three hours.

The meeting in Russia took place the day after Witkoff held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, as well as the leaders of Norway and Finland in Oslo.

During the meeting, Witkoff called Putin a "humanist." In turn, the head of the Kremlin expressed Moscow's apparent readiness to resume tripartite negotiations involving the US, Ukraine, and Russia in the first half of November.

Subsequently, several Republicans in the US Congress criticized Special Envoy Steve Witkoff after he referred to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin as a humanist.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi stated that Ukraine stands ready to participate in tripartite negotiations with the US and Russia. The head of state declared that the Ukrainian side wants the talks to take place as early as possible—no later than the beginning of the month.

Overnight into October 22, Russian troops attacked Kyiv with several waves of missile strikes. The attacks damaged residential buildings, medical facilities, infrastructure, and a restaurant. The shelling also damaged part of the subway infrastructure on the Pivdennyi Bridge. Enemy strikes killed one person and injured 22 others, triggering fires and destruction across several districts:

  • Dniprovskyi district: One person died, and rescuers hospitalized a child. The attack damaged houses and cars and set residential and non-residential buildings ablaze. Five other people sustained injuries.
  • Darnytskyi district: Transport infrastructure sustained damage. No casualties were reported.
  • Sviatoshynskyi district: A non-residential building and a restaurant complex caught fire. Emergency crews extinguished the fire, which covered an area of 1,100 square meters.
  • Obolonskyi district: Fires broke out after non-residential buildings sustained damage. Two people were injured. Firefighters extinguished the blazes.
  • Pecherskyi district: The attack damaged buildings, ambulances, and a monastery. Eight people sustained injuries, including three children.
  • Holosiivskyi district: A hit on a non-residential building injured six people.

Overnight and on the morning of October 22, Russian troops also attacked Kharkiv, damaging residential buildings, a shop, cars, and an office building. In the region, a strike on Lymanivka killed a 42-year-old woman and injured four other people, including two children.

In addition, a Russian drone attacked the premises of a private television and radio company in Kremenchuk, Poltava region, causing a fire. A Russian drone also hit an energy infrastructure facility in the Kremenchuk district. Preliminary data indicates no casualties from that attack.

Russian attacks also damaged energy and industrial facilities, as well as private houses in the Vinnytsia region, with no casualties reported there.

In total, overnight into October 22, Russian occupiers attacked Ukraine with Iskander, S-400, Zircon, and Oniks missiles, along with 210 drones. Hits were recorded across 32 locations, with fallen debris from downed targets documented at eight locations.
