Solutions to win: AI robotic turrets strengthen Ukrainian air defense against Shahed drones
Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat reported that Ukrainian air defense forces have already downed jet-powered drones using robotic turrets. These systems utilize machine vision and artificial intelligence.
Ihnat shared the updates during a national news broadcast, according to Rubryka.
Defense forces are installing automatic turrets across Kyiv to combat strike drones. According to the Air Force spokesperson, specialists are currently positioning these robotic turrets on bridges, among other locations. Ihnat noted that while he initially felt skeptical about using such systems to shoot down jet-powered drones, their deployment has already yielded tangible results.
"Robotic turrets… are now being installed on bridges as well… They have already downed jet-powered UAVs, including Geran-5 drones," the military official stated. "I was a big skeptic myself, wondering how that was even possible. However, the application of innovative technologies and artificial intelligence has eliminated human error and improved technical calculations. These interceptions rely on machine vision. Artificial intelligence allows us to target even jet-powered UAVs."
Ihnat also pointed out that robotic turrets have a limited operational range. Currently, a machine gun serves as the primary weapon on these installations.
At the same time, Presidential Advisor on Technological Issues Serhiш "Flash" Beskrestnov reported that forces have already installed 12 such units in the capital and plan to continue deployment.
"Turrets represent an innovative Ukrainian solution that downs Shahed drones using machine guns controlled by artificial intelligence," Beskrestnov noted.
He also urged residents of the capital to follow safety rules during air raid alerts.
Specifically, Beskrestnov urged Kyiv residents to stay away from windows during air-raid alarms and while these systems are operating. He explained that when machine-gun turrets fire, stray bullets can remain in the air and fall to the ground, posing a hazard to anyone near windows.
"I draw your attention to the fact that during alerts, for your safety, you should stay away from windows," Beskrestnov emphasized.
Background
It should be noted that President Volodymyr Zelenskyi reported on October 4 that Kyiv has deployed over 12 turrets to counter jet-powered drones. Authorities plan to install eight additional units across the Kyiv region.
The head of state also shared that Ukraine has developed a new light missile named "Nika," designed specifically to destroy jet-powered drones.
