United to win: Germany's ARX Robotics and DEUTZ deliver first batch of Gereon ground drones to Ukraine

German defense tech company ARX Robotics and engine manufacturer DEUTZ delivered the first batch of Gereon unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), produced at the DEUTZ facility in Ulm, to Ukraine.

Ukrinform reported the press release from ARX Robotics, according to Rubryka. The initial delivery of Gereon unmanned ground systems occurred 12 weeks after the partners announced plans to scale up joint production.

ARX Robotics noted that these systems will reinforce Ukraine's Defense Forces and expand the fleet of Gereon ground drones already operating in the field. This initial batch forms part of a larger supply agreement, with both companies intending to increase production capacity in the coming months.

Marc Wietfeld, co-founder and CEO of ARX Robotics, emphasized the European armed forces' urgent requirement for unmanned ground platforms.

"European armed forces urgently need thousands of unmanned ground systems to operate effectively in today's threat landscape. Europe possesses both technological innovation and industrial capability to meet this demand. The key lies in how fast we can transition new technologies from development to manufacturing and eventual military deployment," Wietfeld stated.

He added that the partnership with DEUTZ demonstrates how companies can rapidly scale the production of systems urgently needed by military forces.

Under the partnership agreement:

  • ARX Robotics handles system development, software engineering, and platform integration.
  • DEUTZ provides industrial manufacturing infrastructure and expertise in large-scale serial production.

The companies intend to increase Gereon's output over the next few months steadily.

ARX Robotics noted that armed forces across several European nations already deploy its robotic platforms, highlighting that its fleet operating in Ukraine represents the largest concentration of Western-built unmanned ground systems.

Gereon UGV technical specifications

The Gereon robotic ground platform can transport various equipment, supplies, or combat modules weighing up to 500 kilograms over distances of up to 40 kilometers.

Key technical parameters include:

  • Control range: up to 4 km
  • Cameras: thermal night vision
  • Maximum speed: 15 km/h
  • Charging time: 2.5 hours
  • Operational range: up to 40 km
  • Operating endurance: up to 72 hours
  • Payload capacity: up to 500 kg

Additionally, engineers adapted the LOKI remotely controlled weapon station from Valhalla Turrets for integration onto the Gereon platform.

All vehicles connect through a unified network managed by Mithra OS, an operating system equipped with artificial intelligence elements. This setup enables real-time coordination among units, rapid threat response, and efficient tactical management.

Background

In 2024, the German government officially confirmed funding for 30 GEREON RCS unmanned ground vehicles destined for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
