Russian drone hits National Academy of Sciences building in Kyiv, trapping civilians inside

A Russian drone crashed into a non-residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district in central Kyiv on the afternoon of September 28, sparking a fire. Emergency services rushed to the scene as the enemy strike killed and injured several people.
Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko announced the enemy drone attack on Telegram, reporting that the UAV fell in the city center and ignited a blaze, according to Rubryka.
"In the Shevchenkivskyi district, in the center of the capital, a UAV fell onto a non-residential building. Fire. Emergency services are heading to the scene," the mayor wrote.
The press service of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU) told Ukrinform that a Russian drone struck the NASU building directly.
According to the press service, the direct hit resulted in numerous casualties and effectively destroyed half of the historic wing.
"A direct hit. Many injured. Half of the building is gone—this is the old wing. A large-scale fire broke out in the building, people were falling out of windows, and everything around was shattered. It was a workday, everyone was working, and many people were inside," the press service reported.

Later, the head of the Shevchenkivskyi District State Administration, Oleksandr Sazanovych, confirmed fatalities and injuries resulting from the strike.
"I am at the site of the strike in the Shevchenkivskyi district. Unfortunately, there are injuries and deaths. All emergency and relevant services are working on site," Sazanovych stated.
The head of the district administration urged citizens to stay clear of the area and not hinder the work of emergency personnel.

Authorities are clarifying details regarding the casualties and damage.
A UAV strike also hit non-residential premises in the Darnytskyi district.

In the Brovary district, the attack ignited a fire on the grounds of a storage facility.
"Following the enemy attack, we are recording damage in the Brovary district. In one settlement of the district, the attack sparked a fire on the premises of a storage facility. Rescue teams are working on site," reported the head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko.
According to Tkachenko, in another settlement within the Brovary district, the strike damaged worker housing facilities at a local enterprise. Firefighters have already extinguished that blaze.
The head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration added that the strike in the Brovary district caused no casualties or injuries.
However, across the Kyiv region over the past 24 hours, Russian drone attacks killed three people and injured eight others.
During this period, Russian strikes damaged 21 civilian sites across five districts of the region:
- In the Brovary district, strikes damaged two storage facilities and two administrative buildings.
- In the Bucha district, attacks damaged a private residential property, a market, and six vehicles.
- In the Fastiv district, strikes damaged a manufacturing facility and six vehicles.
- In the Boryspil district, strikes damaged one vehicle.
- In the Bila Tserkva district, the attack damaged an agricultural enterprise and an apartment building.
