"This is how we work now": Mathernová shows how EU Delegation staff endure strikes on Kyiv

EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarína Mathernová demonstrated what the morning looked like during the Russian attack on Kyiv from the windows of the EU Delegation.
The diplomat published photos on X and described the strikes on the capital's civilian and municipal infrastructure, Rubryka reports.
On the morning of September 23, the ambassador published a photograph taken from the windows of the EU Delegation in Kyiv. Burning objects were visible near the diplomatic mission's building.

Mathernová reported that Russia attacked two gas stations and warehouses in Kyiv that morning, while also shelling the capital's railway infrastructure.
"This is the reality of war. It is ugly, brutal, and deeply tragic. If you woke up in peace today, my friends, do not take it for granted," the EU Ambassador noted.

The diplomat later reported two more loud explosions near the delegation. According to her, staff could see them directly from the mission's office. Mathernová also published a photograph showing EU Delegation employees sheltering in the hallway.

Later, Mathernová recounted another powerful explosion. According to her, just as she entered her office, a very loud blast echoed as a jet-powered drone struck an object directly behind the building visible from her window.
"This follows on earlier hits this morning, also close to Delegation.
Also, two gasoline stations were hit in Kyiv city. This russian terror never stops…" the diplomat stated.

Background
Overnight on September 23, Russian drones continued to attack the Ukrainian capital, damaging property across several Kyiv districts.
Russian forces continued attacking Kyiv with drones through the afternoon of September 23. According to the prosecutor's office, Russian troops deployed UAVs in the morning and afternoon against:
- Gas stations
- A business center
- An office building
- A pharmaceutical facility
- A former market building
- Premises near the railway station
The attacks also damaged nearby parked cars.
As of 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23, UAV strikes and falling debris killed two people in the Darnytskyi and Solomianskyi districts.
Additionally, authorities reported 36 injured:
- Seven in the Holosiivskyi district
- Five in the Darnytskyi district
- 20 in the Solomianskyi district
- Four in the Sviatoshynskyi district
In Kyiv's Sviatoshynskyi district, debris fell onto the grounds of an educational institution, injuring three people.
The prosecutor's office noted that the enemy launched repeated strikes on the same targets. Officials are establishing the final casualty figures.
Law enforcement officers qualify the actions of the Russian military as another war crime resulting in civilian injury and death (Parts 1 and 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
The Russian UAV attack on Kyiv continues, and officials urge residents of the capital to stay in safe locations.
Heavy smoke was reported across several districts of Kyiv following fires caused by the Russian attacks.
