Russian ballistic missile attack injures at least 12, including two children, and damages buildings in Kyiv

Russian forces attacked Ukraine with ballistic missiles overnight on September 17. The missile strike on Kyiv injured at least 12 people, including two children. The attack damaged residential buildings, offices, and warehouses in several districts of the capital.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko, the Kyiv City Military Administration, the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, and Ukraine's Air Force reported the attack and its aftermath, according to Rubryka.

Russian forces attacked Ukraine with ballistic missiles overnight on September 17. Authorities issued a nationwide air raid alert.

"Missile threat across Ukraine! A MiG-31K has taken off!" the Air Force reported.

The Air Force later warned of a threat of ballistic missile launches from Kursk. The military subsequently reported missiles heading toward Kyiv, Dnipro, and Zaporizhzhia.

Russian forces then launched a missile strike on Kyiv. The attack damaged:

  • An office building
  • Residential buildings
  • Other properties across several districts.

In the Dniprovskyi district, debris fell at several locations. It damaged an office building and a residential building. Debris also fell on warehouse grounds and near a gas station.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko later reported further damage. At one location, the attack damaged the windows and facade of a three-story office building.

Preliminary reports indicated that a strike hit a nonresidential building in the Sviatoshynskyi district.

In the Solomianskyi district, preliminary reports indicated that the attack destroyed a warehouse.

As of 4:39 a.m., the mayor reported that the attack had injured 12 people in Kyiv. The injured included two children, aged 10 and 12.

Nine of those injured were in the hospital, the mayor added.

Reports also indicated that the attack reduced water pressure on Kyiv's left bank and in the Solomianskyi, Holosiivskyi, and Sviatoshynskyi districts.

Kyivvodokanal is now operating normally and supplying water to all city residents. Crews quickly restored operations at its facilities and resumed service.

Kyiv's water supply has now fully resumed, and all of the utility's facilities are operating.

Kyiv region

In addition to the overnight strike on the capital, Russian forces again attacked the Kyiv region on the evening of September 16. Authorities recorded damage in the Brovary and Fastiv districts.

"During the evening drone attack in the Brovary district, strikes damaged an outbuilding, agricultural machinery, semi-trailers, and a car.

A fire also broke out on a private residential property, which crews extinguished," the Kyiv Regional Military Administration reported.

In the Fastiv district, the attack damaged business facilities and private homes.

Preliminary reports indicated no deaths or injuries from this attack.

Background

As previously reported, a Russian drone attack overnight on September 16 caused a fire at a warehouse in Kyiv's Sviatoshynskyi district. Reports indicated that one person was injured.

Also on September 16, Russian drones destroyed a warehouse that stored props belonging to the Kvartal 95 studio. The attack caused no injuries. The studio said it would hold all scheduled concerts despite the loss of its property.

In addition, a Russian attack on Kyiv overnight on September 15 injured a man, leaving him in serious condition. Preliminary reports indicated strikes on a gas station in the Darnytskyi district and warehouse facilities in the Obolonskyi district. Reports later confirmed another drone attack on the capital that morning. The Russian strike injured six people. Russian drones hit gas stations in the Darnytskyi and Holosiivskyi districts.
