For reference:

In late November 2024, Syria underwent a dramatic change of power as rebel forces, advancing rapidly, toppled President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

The regime's collapse prompted Moscow to hurriedly withdraw its warships from Russia's naval facility in Tartus.

Leading world leaders expressed support for the country's changes, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine announced its readiness to restore diplomatic relations with Syria's new leadership in the future.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine would help stabilize the situation in Syria after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime. Ukrainian grain will be supplied to Syrian citizens.

As part of the transition period, rebel leader Ahmed al-Sharaa was declared interim president. The constitution was suspended, and parliament was dissolved.

The US government previously offered up to $10 million for information on Ahmed Hussein al‑Sharaa, the leader of Hayat Tahrir al‑Sham, which US officials have described as linked to al‑Qaeda. Washington later reviewed the group's status, and President Donald Trump subsequently met with al‑Sharaa.
