Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed Valerii Zaluzhny, former Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's armed forces and current Ambassador to the United Kingdom, as Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Rubryka reports this referring to the Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 151/2025 dated March 3, 2025.

"To appoint Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Valerii Fedorovych Zaluzhny as Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on a part-time basis," the document states.

From now on, Zaluzhny will perform the duties of:

  • Representative of Ukraine to the International Maritime Organization,
  • Ambassador of Ukraine to the United Kingdom on a part-time basis.

The International Maritime Organization is an intergovernmental specialized agency of the UN. It combats trade discrimination and adopts norms and standards for safety at sea and the prevention of ship pollution. It also monitors freedom of navigation and the implementation of maritime conventions.

Head of State Volodymyr Zelensky awarded the former Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's armed forces, Valery Zaluzhny, and the head of Ukraine's intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, the title of Hero of Ukraine.

On March 7, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky approved the candidacy of Valerii Zaluzhny, the former Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's armed forces, for the position of Ambassador of Ukraine to the United Kingdom.

The Head of State noted that Zaluzhny wished to work in the diplomatic field.

In May, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree dismissing the former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), Valery Zaluzhny, from military service and appointing him ambassador to the United Kingdom.

On July 11, 2024, Zaluzhny officially began performing the duties of Ukraine's ambassador to the United Kingdom.
