On the evening of February 9, the Ukrainian Air Force reported a new wave of drone assaults launched by Russian forces targeting Ukraine. In Sumy, the attack destroyed numerous vehicles and damaged five houses, leaving one person injured. Meanwhile, in Kyiv's Solomianskyi district, debris from a fallen drone ignited a fire in a non-residential building, further highlighting the impact of the ongoing conflict.

The capital's mayor, Vitalii Klychko, Suspilne Sumy, and the acting mayor of Sumy, Artem Kobzar, reported this.

On the evening of Sunday, February 9, the Russians attacked Sumy with strike UAVs of the Shahed type. According to preliminary data, the enemy drone hit a parking lot in front of a residential building.

According to the mayor, Artem Kobzar, cars were burning, and windows in people's apartments were broken.

Explosions were heard in the city around 11:00 p.m. At that time, an air alert was declared in most regions of Ukraine due to the threat of the enemy using strike UAVs.

"Regrettably, another Shahed drone strike has occurred, causing significant damage to numerous vehicles and blowing out many windows. Emergency services, including the State Emergency Service, police, and ambulance teams, are currently on the scene, addressing the aftermath of the attack," the mayor said.

Volodymyr Artiukh, the head of the Sumy Regional Emergency Management Agency, has confirmed that the drone strike took place in a residential area surrounded by houses and schools. Rescue services are actively conducting checks in apartments to ensure resident safety and assess the extent of the damage.

Situation in the region

The regional military administration reported that on February 9, Russian forces conducted 117 attacks on border territories and settlements in the Sumy region, resulting in 205 recorded explosions.

Russia shelled the Sumy, Khotinska, Yunakivska, Myropilska, Bilopolska, Krasnopilska, Velykopysarivska, Esmanska, and Seredyno-Budska communities.

Explosions in Kyiv

In Kyiv's Solomianskyi district, a non-residential building caught fire after being hit by debris from an enemy drone.

Explosions were heard in Kyiv at around 1:30 a.m. There were at least four of them.

Local forums have speculated that the incidents might be linked to the activity of air defense forces and their equipment.

Monitoring channels reported that enemy UAVs were detected on the outskirts of Kyiv.

Explosions were heard again in the capital at around 1:43 a.m., probably related to air defense work.

As the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, later said, the Russian invaders continue to attack the capital with drones.

"The sounds you can hear are the work of our defenders on targets," he noted.

The Air Force of Ukraine's armed forces reported that Shahed UAVs were mainly spotted in the Kyiv region.

It should be noted that the Kyiv Regional Military Administration announced an air defense operation in the region late in the evening due to enemy drones.

"In the Solomiansky district of the capital, previously due to the fall of UAV debris, a one-story non-residential building is on fire. The fire is in the nearby territory," Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko later reported.

According to the mayor, a fire was also recorded in the Sviatoshynskyi district; however, emergency services say this incident is not related to an enemy attack on the city.

For reference:
On the night of February 9, Russian forces launched an assault on Ukraine using 151 Shahed-type strike drones and various types of simulator drones. Air defense shot down 70 of them; another 74 UAVs did not reach their targets.

Air defense operated in 14 regions of Ukraine.
