The first pipeline supply of biomethane between Ukraine and the European Union took place in February 2025. A Ukrainian biomethane producer exported 67 thousand cubic meters.

The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine reported this.

"The start of biomethane exports from Ukraine to the EU is important in strengthening energy independence and integrating our country into the European energy space. This opens up new opportunities for our energy sector, contributes to the decarbonization of the economy, and reduces dependence on fossil fuels. Ukraine is ready to become a reliable supplier of clean energy for Europe. The Ministry pays significant attention to the issue of biomethane exports, which is important within the new business model of the natural gas market and the energy sector of Ukraine as a whole," the Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Herman Halushchenko, said.

The volume of the first biomethane supply to the EU amounted to 67 thousand cubic meters.

Ukrainian producers can export biomethane to EU countries through the Ukrainian gas transmission system, connecting biomethane plants to both the gas transmission and gas distribution networks. The terms and tariffs for connection and transportation through the Ukrainian gas transmission system for biomethane producers are similar to those for natural gas producers.

The Memorandum on Strategic Partnership between Ukraine and the EU in the Fields of Biomethane, Hydrogen, and Other Synthetic Gases was signed in February 2023.

To ensure the functioning of the biomethane market, the Procedure for Customs Clearance of Exports of Ukrainian Biomethane was approved in accordance with the Order of the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine No. 380 "On Amendments to Certain Regulatory Acts of the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine on Customs Matters." The relevant Procedure entered into force in September 2024.

For reference:

Biomethane is purified biogas whose characteristics correspond to natural gas. It can be used for heating, electricity generation, and transportation. Importantly, this biogas can be integrated into the gas infrastructure without additional costs for new networks, making it available for widespread use.
