Ukrainian track and field athlete Yaroslava Mahuchikh kicked off her 2025 season by capturing a gold medal at the competition in Italy.

Suspilne Sport reports this.

As reported, Yaroslava began the 2025 international season at the Udin Jump Development tournament in Italy. The Ukrainian's rivals were titled track and field athletes, in particular:

  • Euro 2021 silver medalist  Marija Vuković,
  • 2022 U20 world champion Karmen Bruus.

How did Yaroslava Mahuchikh perform at the event?

After skipping the first four heights, the Ukrainian athlete began her competition at 1.91 meters. By then, six of the ten competitors had already exited the event, leaving Mahuchikh, Italian champion Idea Pieroni, European U18 champion Lilianna Bathory, and European U20 silver medalist Elisabeth Pihela in the battle for the podium.

At a height of 1.88 meters, Hungarian athlete Lilianna Báthory cleared the bar on her first attempt, setting a new personal record by surpassing her previous best by one centimeter.

The competition for gold at 1.94 meters came down to Mahuchikh and Báthory. Báthory successfully cleared 1.91 meters on her final attempt, while the Ukrainian athlete, Mahuchikh, cleared 1.94 meters on her first try. Meanwhile, the Italian competitor was unable to clear the height.

After securing victory, Mahuchikh aimed to clear 1.98 meters but opted not to use any attempts at that height, concluding the competition with a top mark of 1.94 meters.

Notably, this victory marks the first time in four years that the Ukrainian jumper has won an award at the competitions in Udine. The last time Mahuchikh competed in this local tournament was in 2021 when she claimed gold by clearing a height of 2 meters.

For reference:

In the 2024 season, Mahuchikh achieved several significant milestones:

  • she set a new world record in the high jump with a leap of 2.10 meters,
  • secured her first Olympic gold medal as well as a European Championship title,
  •  and successfully defended her title as the Diamond League champion in athletics.
