According to the festival's website, as reported by Rubryka, Chernov received the award for Best Director in the "World Documentary" category.
"Following 20 Days in Mariupol (Sundance Film Festival 2023), Ukrainian director and journalist Mstyslav Chernov returns with a gripping portrayal of life in the trenches and the fierce battle for a small but significant place—a desperate fight against Russia for Ukraine's liberation.
In this depiction of total war—from command posts leading soldiers to the funerals of the fallen and the brutal battles fought by former civilians—Chernov has crafted a remarkable film. It captures both the haunting beauty of reclaiming one's homeland and the unrelenting horror and futility of war," said Indian screenwriter Sudeep Sharma.
The film premiered on January 23 at the Sundance Film Festival as part of the World Documentary program.
"2000 Meters to Andriivka" is the second feature-length film by Ukrainian director Mstyslav Chernov, an Oscar, Pulitzer Prize, Directors and Producers Guild of America, BAFTA, and Royal Television Society Television Journalism Award winner, as well as an Associated Press journalist. The film depicts the liberation of Andriivka, a village near Bakhmut, by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, with a focus on the role of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade in the operation.
During a fierce counteroffensive in 2023, journalists followed soldiers from the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade as they advanced meter by meter through narrow terrain to liberate the Russian-occupied and mine-surrounded village of Andriivka on the outskirts of Bakhmut. Filming began in September 2023, and the entire process of creating the film took nearly 1.5 years.
