Solutions from Ukraine: new underground school opens in Kharkiv to accommodate nearly 1,000 children

Kharkiv has inaugurated its second underground school, offering a secure learning environment for 750 students. With the completion of its second construction phase, this facility will expand its capacity to educate nearly a thousand children, reflecting the city's innovative approach to ensuring uninterrupted education.

The mayor of Kharkiv, Ihor Terekhov, reported this.

According to the head of the city, the school was built taking into account the highest safety standards, which is especially important in the conditions of the ongoing war.

 Attention to detail ensures a comfortable learning environment:

• Wider corridors facilitate easy movement.
• Inclusive and resource rooms are equipped for the comfort of both children and teachers.

"Today, one boy said: "It's better here than at home." At first, I didn't understand how this could be perceived. But then I realized that, perhaps, this is still the highest praise. So, we have created a place where children feel protected and happy," Terekhov emphasized.

Increasingly, the school has become a meeting place for children who, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the war, have never had the opportunity to study together in person.

"That's why it's both joyful and sad… But the most important thing is that they are together now," the mayor emphasized.

It is noted that the construction of the school was made possible thanks to funding from the Taiwanese government and the help of international partners. This is a vivid example of how joint efforts can ensure children's right to education even in the most difficult conditions.

The underground school in Kharkiv is part of a large-scale initiative to create safe learning spaces in the region. Currently, more than 6 thousand children are studying in such schools and shelters. The goal of the project is not only to provide education, but also to give children a sense of protection.

In April 2024, Kharkiv completed the construction of its first underground school, featuring 20 classrooms designed to accommodate 900 students across two shifts.

As reported, in Kharkiv, not only students but also preschoolers have now started studying underground: 650 children have already been enrolled in an unusual children's institution in the metro.
