UAVs target refinery in Russia’s Voronezh region and aircraft factory in Smolensk

On the night of Tuesday, January 21, unidentified drones targeted the Russian city of Smolensk, specifically aiming at an aircraft factory in the city's Zadneprovsky district. Additionally, on the evening of January 20, residents of the Voronezh region reported hearing explosions, with significant noise in the settlement of Liski. Preliminary reports indicate that a UAV struck the refinery, which has been attacked twice before.

Social networks and the Russian Defense Ministry reported this.

As noted by the Russian Defense Ministry, 55 Ukrainian drones were shot down over the Russian Federation overnight.

"22 – over the territory of the Bryansk region, 12 – over the territory of the Rostov region, 10 – over the territory of the Smolensk region, 6 UAVs – over the territory of the Voronezh region, 4 – over the territory of the Saratov region and one – over the territory of the Kursk region," the message said.

Reports indicate a fire broke out near the aircraft factory in the Zadneprovsky district after the UAV strike. Local media shared this information, which the Ukrainian Channel Monitor confirmed.

"One of the targets of the UAV attack by Ukraine's armed forces could have been the aircraft factory in the Zadniprovsky district of the city. The main part of the explosions thundered there," the network wrote.

After the explosions, Smolensk experienced power outages. According to the Russians, the water supply was also temporarily lost.

As a result of the work of the Russian air defense, the fragments of the UAV fell onto the roof of a high-rise building, which caught fire.

It should be noted that on December 31, the Smolensk region of the Russian Federation complained about an attack by drones, as a result of which an oil depot was damaged.

Also, soldiers of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine attacked the Smolensk Aviation Plant with drones that night, November 27, 2023, in Russia. The operation was successful; the targets were hit.

Voronezh region

Russian channels, referencing residents, report that at least four explosions occurred, with flames visible in the area of the oil depot. A video of the fire has also been shared online.

This likely refers to the Rosneft oil depot in the village of Liski, known as the Liskinskaya oil depot.

Later, the head of the Voronezh region, Alexander Gusev, stated that several UAVs had been "detected, destroyed, and suppressed" in the Liskinsky district. However, when one of the drones fell on the oil depot's territory, a new fire broke out.

For reference:

It is worth mentioning that on the night of January 16, a series of explosions were heard in the Tambov region of Russia near Kotovsk and the village of Kuzmino-Gat, where a gunpowder plant is located. Air defense systems were operating in the area. Also, in the Voronezh region of the Russian Federation, local authorities reported an attack by drones on an oil depot.

In addition, on the night of January 14, the Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out the most massive strike on military facilities of the Russian army at a distance of 200 to 1,100 km deep into Russian territory. In particular, targets in the Bryansk, Saratov, Tula regions, and the Republic of Tatarstan were attacked.

The General Staff of Ukraine's armed forces reported a successful attack on the "Kristal Plant" oil storage facility in Engels, Saratov region. This comes shortly after a fire from a previous strike, which had been burning for five days, was finally extinguished.

The Bryansk Chemical Plant in Seltso was also hit. According to the General Staff, this is a strategic facility of the Russian military-industrial complex. It produces ammunition for artillery, multiple-launch rocket systems, aviation, engineering ammunition, and components for the Kh-59 cruise missiles.
