Over 60% of Ukrainians donate to Ukraine's armed forces, rely on friend recommendations for donation Information – survey

The team at Rakuten Viber investigated whether Ukrainians contributed to Ukraine's armed forces and their friends in service. In 2024, 63% of those surveyed reported continuing to donate, while another 27% assisted in other forms these numbers were consistent with those from the end of 2023. Over half of Ukrainians learned about the fundraising efforts through word of mouth from friends and acquaintances.

Towards the end of the year, Rakuten Viber typically asks Ukrainians if they plan on donating to Ukraine's armed forces and their friends in service. Participants also shared how they became aware of the fundraisers. Approximately 30 thousand individuals participated in the survey through the official Rakuten Viber Ukraine channel.

The survey results showed that 63% of Ukrainians donate to the Ukrainian army; 44% do so from each salary. At the same time, every fourth respondent (27%) helps in other ways. Only 6% of respondents do not see the point in donations. To the question, "Do you donate to Ukraine's armed forces and friends who serve?" the answers were distributed as follows:

  • Yes, regularly from each salary – 44% (46% at the end of 2023);
  • I help in other ways – 27% (26% at the end of 2023);
  • Irregularly, but after each shelling, I turn my anger into donations – 14% (the same at the end of 2023);
  • I don't see the point in this – 6% (4% at the end of 2023);
  • Of course, a little bit every day – 5% (6% at the end of 2023);
  • I serve in Ukraine's armed forces – 4% (5% at the end of 2023).

According to Viber, Ukrainians were also inquired about their sources of information regarding fundraisers. Most respondents (53%) mentioned learning about them through gatherings with friends and acquaintances. Another 13% of users said they get the information from news sources. The breakdown of responses to the question "Where do you usually find out about these donation collections?" is as follows:

  • I support the fundraisers of friends and acquaintances and learn from them — 53%;
  • I learn from the news, through news channels that support the collections— 13%;
  • I learn from bloggers and influential people whom I follow — 11%;
  • I follow large foundations that are engaged in this — 5%;
  • I find out the information on donations in other ways — 18%.

The research method used was an anonymous online survey with a sample size of over 30,000 participants. The main age group was 34 to 45, with over 50% of respondents falling under the age of 45.

As reported at the beginning of 2024, 83% of Ukrainians continue to donate money or volunteer. Donating has become an integral part of Ukrainian life.

In addition, 64% of Ukrainians are ready to take on a greater burden of war, and they support raising the military levy. 32% do not support such an increase.

Earlier, Rubryka wrote that in 2023, Ukrainians donated 27.4 billion hryvnias, more than three times the amount donated last year, when it was 8.5 billion hryvnias.
