Volodymyr Zelensky noted that Carter was a leader who served as president when Ukraine had not yet gained independence – "however, his heart was always with us when we had to fight for freedom."
"We deeply appreciate his steadfast commitment to Christian faith and democratic values, as well as his unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of Russia's unprovoked aggression," Zelensky emphasized.
According to him, Jimmy Carter dedicated his life to strengthening world peace and protecting human rights.
"Today, let us remember: peace matters and the world must remain united in standing against those who threaten these values," the President of Ukraine noted.

Former US President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jimmy Carter died on December 29 at his home in Maryland at the age of 100. His son James E. Carter III, known as Chip, announced this.
The ex-president was 100 years old and the oldest US president ever.
His son announced that the former president had passed away but did not specify the exact cause. In a statement released in February 2023, the Carter Center disclosed that the former president, following multiple hospitalizations, had decided to end treatment and receive hospice care at home. Over the past few years, he had been battling a severe type of skin cancer called melanoma, which had spread to his liver and brain.
Carter's wife, Rosalynn, died on November 19, 2023, at 96. The Carters, who were close partners in public life, were married for more than 77 years, the longest presidential marriage in US history.
His last public appearance was at her funeral in Plains, where he sat in the front row in a wheelchair. Carter was last photographed outside his home with family and friends as he watched an air show on October 1, organized to celebrate his 100th birthday.
Jimmy Carter became the Democratic president of the United States in 1976. Before that, he served as governor of Georgia and senator.
Under his leadership, the United States and the Soviet Union concluded the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT II) in 1979, symbolized by the famous "kiss" between President Carter and General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev. Already in 1980, at the height of the Cold War, he initiated the boycott of the Moscow Olympics.
In 1980, Carter lost the election to Ronald Reagan, after which he founded the Carter Center for Human Rights.
In the new century, in 2002, the 39th President of the United States received the Nobel Peace Prize "for his efforts to peacefully resolve conflicts around the world and for the fight for human rights."
US President Joe Biden expressed his condolences on the death of the 39th President of the United States and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jimmy Carter, and declared January 9 a day of mourning for the deceased.
"…I designate January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning throughout the United States.
I call on the American people to gather on this day in their respective places of worship to honor the memory of President James Earl Carter Jr.
I invite people worldwide who share our grief to join us in this solemn commemoration," Joe Biden said.
