Ukraine receives liquefied natural gas from US for the first time

The first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States to Ukraine, amounting to approximately 100 cubic meters, arrived at a Greek LNG terminal. While some of the gas will be resold to local companies, Ukraine's DTEK, the nation's largest private energy company, will retain about a tenth of the supply.

"Such cargoes not only provide the region with a flexible and secure energy source but also further weaken Russia's influence on our energy system," said DTEK CEO Maksym Tymchenko.

This marks a significant milestone for Ukraine, which has never purchased LNG directly before. The event is part of a broader strategy to reduce reliance on Russian gas and integrate more deeply into the European energy market. Europe currently sources around 40% of its LNG imports from the United States.

The shipment stems from an agreement signed in June between DTEK and the US company Venture Global. This deal guarantees LNG supplies until the end of 2026 and includes a separate 20-year gas purchase agreement, ensuring long-term cooperation.

The LNG will be sourced from Venture Global's Plaquemines plant on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana and distributed to Ukraine and other Eastern European countries. A substantial portion of the contracted LNG may be delivered to European nations through DTEK's subsidiary, D.Trading.

"Thanks to this landmark agreement, we will help bolster Ukraine's natural gas supply security, support regional recovery and economic growth, and enhance European energy security," said Venture Global CEO Mike Sabel.
