Kyiv’s National Art Museum unveils two-volume book showcasing painting and graphics collection

The publication of the "State Collections of Ukraine" series was presented in Kyiv, which contains the best examples of paintings and graphics from the National Art Museum of Ukraine collection, which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year.

The President of the National Academy of Arts, painter Viktor Sydorenko, noted that a state is recognized by its culture, and the works presented in the album testify that Ukraine has a great artistic legacy.

The two-volume publication presents over 970 of the best works of outstanding Ukrainian artists in Ukrainian and English:

• Taras Shevchenko,
• Mykola Pymonenko,
• Oleksandr Murashko,
• Mykhailo Boychuk,
• Fedir and Vasyl Krychevsky,
• Heorhiy Narbut and others.

"The museum's collection includes over 41 thousand items. The presentation edition contains 534 graphic works and 445 paintings in two volumes. Through visual culture, we present our Ukrainian identity to the world," Yuliia Lytvynets, Director General of the National Museum of Art, said.

How does it work?

Lytvynets clarified that the volume on graphics was created during the full-scale war. The museum's funds contain over 20,000 graphic works.

The books "National Art Museum of Ukraine. Painting" and "National Art Museum of Ukraine. Graphics" are the seventh and eighth installments in the "State Collections of Ukraine" series. Before these, there were volumes featuring the collections of the Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko National Museum of Art collections and the Borys Voznytsky Lviv National Gallery of Art. Additionally, an art album showcasing the works of Maria Prymachenko was also previously released.

Mykhailo Andreiev, co-founder of the "State Collections of Ukraine" series, emphasized that such publications should remind the world about Ukrainian art.

"The Russian Empire… failed to tear us out of the context of world art. Ukraine remained. And our books are called to always and everywhere remind that Ukrainian art exists," he emphasized.

According to Oleksii Danilov, another series co-founder, the books have been donated to museums and libraries in Ukraine and abroad. These institutions include the Vatican, the Louvre, and the US Library of Congress.

Further distribution of these publications to foreign embassies and other institutions to promote Ukrainian culture is planned.

An art album titled "Inclusive Art Practices in Ukraine" was presented in Kyiv. It features works by artists with disabilities.

It was also reported that a unit had been created in the armed forces to protect Ukraine's cultural heritage during the war.
