Russia's war against Ukraine claims lives of 143 artists and 94 media workers

143 Ukrainian artists and 94 media workers died in the war in Ukraine.

The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications reported this.

"The war took the lives of 143 Ukrainian artists and 94 media workers. These data indicate the scale of losses and remind us of the tragic pages of our history.

Just as in the 1920s and early 1930s, the Stalinist regime destroyed a generation of Ukrainian artists, so today Russia is purposefully destroying the cultural elite of Ukraine," the report says.

The ministry stressed that the Executed Renaissance, a well-known literary and artistic movement, brought forth exceptional works of literature, painting, music, and theater to the world.

"These artists were the pride of our nation. Today, we are again losing not just talented Ukrainians but also a part of our soul because each of our artists has a unique personality that has enriched Ukrainian culture," the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications added.

As the ministry emphasized, systematic crimes against journalists and the media committed by Russia pose a serious threat to freedom of speech and information security and undermine democratic values and human rights.

"Journalists currently working in Ukraine create important news, investigations, and reports in conditions of increased risk. They record the events of the war to provide Ukraine and the world with reliable information about what is happening.

Media workers 24/7 collect irrefutable evidence of the occupiers' crimes and highlight the strength, feat, and courage of our defenders," the message states.

The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications added that not only Ukrainians but also seven foreign media workers who told the world about the events in Ukraine died during the war.

In particular, the poet and prose writer Oleksii Bezpaltsev died during the Russian-Ukrainian war. He lost his life while on a combat mission in the Kharkiv region. He spent around a year fighting on the fronts of Pokrovsk and Kupiansk before his death at the age of 34.

On the night of December 17, volunteer Yevhenia Duhopelnykova, the Ukrainian writer who wrote the book "Girls at War: The Journey of Dolbokliuy" and the blog of the same name, died.

In addition, the Ukrainian writer and author of the novel "Factory" Ihor Mysiak (call sign "Poet") died at the front.

For reference:

Rubryka previously stated that 32 members of the Ukrainian media are being held captive by Russia. He also mentioned that talks are currently ongoing for their prompt release.

On October 10, the representative of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, Petro Yatsenko, confirmed the death of Viktoriia Roshchyna in Russian captivity.

On November 15, the "Empty Chairs" demonstration occurred in Sofia Square in the capital. The purpose was to show support for journalists, writers, cultural figures, and human rights activists who have either gone missing, been imprisoned, or are currently in Russian captivity.
