More Ukrainians support joining NATO without occupied territories – survey
The percentage of Ukrainians in favor of Ukraine joining NATO, even with occupied territories, has risen to 47%. This marks a significant increase from a year and a half ago when only 33% favored the idea.
The Democratic Initiatives Foundation and the Razumkov Center reported that.
As sociologists noted, 36% of respondents do not support accession to NATO under such conditions, 16% less than in June 2023.
Among people who do not support joining while under occupation, the most frequently mentioned groups are:
- Individuals over the age of 50 (40%);
- Residents of southern regions (48%), as well as some central and eastern regions;
- Respondents living below the poverty line (46%);
- Those who have family members living in the occupied territories (42%)
However, 55% of surveyed believe joining NATO is the most favorable option for ensuring Ukraine's security. Twelve percent of respondents favor remaining neutral with the assurance of international guarantees.
Of the proposed options, the least reliable in terms of the country's security for respondents were:
- Non-aligned status of Ukraine with limitations on its defense capabilities,
- Relying exclusively on its forces while maintaining defense capabilities. These scenarios were supported by 3% of respondents each.
The survey was conducted by the Democratic Initiatives Foundation and the Razumkov Center from November 29 to December 14, 2024, in territories controlled by the government of Ukraine and where there are no hostilities. 1,518 respondents were surveyed face-to-face. The theoretical sampling error does not exceed 2.6%
For reference:
In addition, NATO has taken over the coordination of Western military assistance to Ukraine instead of the United States. This happened with a delay of several months.
