Russia destroys one of Ukraine’s most secret registries in latest cyberattack

Attacks by Russian hackers on Ukrainian registries do not pose a significant threat to data security, as all stolen or destroyed registries have backup copies that ensure their restoration.

This was confirmed by Denys Maliuska, the former Minister of Justice of Ukraine, in a comment to UP.

Recently, Russian hackers targeted the State Register of Civil Status Acts, which contains crucial information about births, marriages, and adoptions. This register is one of the most sensitive, as it holds personal data that, while seemingly ordinary, includes legally protected secrets, such as information about adoptions.

Maliuska pointed out that this is not the first time Russian hackers have targeted Ukrainian resources since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. He noted that earlier attacks appeared to focus on stealing information, but now the hackers are also destroying it, signaling a shift in their tactics.

However, Maliuska reassured that the Ministry of Justice has a multi-level backup system in place. As a result, there is no doubt that the lost or damaged data will be restored.

Iryna Stefanishyna, the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, previously reported that, due to a large-scale cyberattack by the Russian Federation, it was decided to suspend all registries managed by the Ministry of Justice. Restoration efforts are currently underway. However, these events did not impact other state information resources unrelated to the Ministry of Justice, including the Diia digital governance application.

According to the minister, there are no restrictions on citizens' rights to access civil status acts, such as birth, death, marriage, and divorce records. These services can still be performed in the usual manner, but with the use of paper documents.

It is important to note that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukrainian information resources in an attempt to destabilize the functioning of state institutions. Nonetheless, Ukrainian IT specialists have consistently responded quickly, restoring any damaged or stolen data and ensuring the resilience of the country's digital infrastructure.

Large-scale cyberattacks by the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine

Hackers from the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine recently successfully attacked the systems of Gazprombank.

Also, the Main Intelligence Directorate recently carried out a large-scale cyberattack on Russian Internet services. Cyber experts targeted the financial sector of the Russian Federation. It is known that the attack lasted a week, the services of major Russian banks were attacked. The GUR also attacked Russian providers, national payment systems, social networks, messengers, government resources and dozens of other services.

In addition, due to the large-scale cyber attack by the GUR, problems with the operation of ATMs were observed in Russia.

Also, cyber experts from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, together with the hacker group VO Team, disabled the equipment of the Vega provider in the Cheliabinsk region. The Russian enterprise that develops nuclear munitions is without Internet and communication.

In addition, in August, GUR cyber specialists hacked Russian television and showed a video about the war in Ukraine.
