Rebuilding Ukraine: Kirovohrad region’s youth presents innovative vision for public areas

In October and November, the public organization "Nova Druzhkivka" held a series of workshops on planning modern public spaces in the Priiutivska, Oleksandriyska, and Znamianska communities.

The NGO "Nova Druzhkivka" reported that.

What is the problem?

Many communities in Ukraine have neglected public spaces that fail to meet residents' needs. Despite being one of the most active groups in society, youths often have no say in planning these places, even though they are the primary users.

What is the solution?

The public organization "Nova Druzhkivka" found a way to involve young people in creating modern, convenient, and accessible spaces. In October and November, a series of workshops on spatial planning were organized in the Priiutivska, Oleksandriyska, and Znamianska communities as part of the "Move the Youth" project.

Anna Pavlenko, an experienced urban planner and trainer, led a productive discussion with participants, including young people and members of public organizations. Together, they shared innovative ideas, learned from successful experiences abroad, and devised initial action plans to improve specific areas in their communities.

How does it work?

Participants learned about:

  • principles of inclusivity and architectural accessibility;
  • climate change resilience and nature-based solutions;
  • experience of other countries in planning public spaces.

They selected overlooked but potential-filled spots:

  • Voinovka the waterfront by the "Pazl" youth center;
  • Oleksandriia – the square by the swimming pool;
  • Znamianka – "Pyatochok" square.

They analyzed the local context, generated solutions, and identified specific proposals for developing spaces.

"When planning the development of public spaces, it is important to use participatory methods, that is, to involve representatives of different groups and communities. Young people are no exception because they understand their needs better," Anna Pavlenko, a trainer and urbanist, a specialist in urban planning, says.

Participants confirmed the importance of such events for the development of communities.

Illia Veduta, a student at the "Intellect" Lyceum (Znamianka):

"I learned how important it is to consider different people's needs when planning any space. Thanks to such initiatives, there is an opportunity to seek support among like-minded people."

Anastasiia Nedvyha, director of the youth center "Pazl" (Voinivka):

"It was a useful experience. We discussed ideas that in the future, gradually, in small steps, we will be able to implement. The spaces should be inclusive and consider each resident's needs."

Sofiia Serheieva, secretary of the Youth Council of the Oleksandriyska community:

"Youth is the driving force of change. And although the authorities make decisions, ideas are always born among people. The demand for comfortable public spaces is obvious because young people want to have places for rest, meetings, and leisure."

The workshops provided young people with knowledge, skills, and motivation to contribute to improving their communities. Spatial development is not solely the responsibility of authorities but also involves the actions of residents. These events give young individuals a voice and impact the changes in their hometowns.

As Rubryka mentioned, the "Atmosfera" youth center in Drabivtsi, situated in the Cherkasy region, provides a range of opportunities for people of all ages, such as socializing, education, involvement in meaningful projects, and participation in various sports events. The center was created by the youth, who turned an abandoned building into a vibrant hub of productivity and progress, making their town more inviting to young individuals and innovative ideas.
