The city's municipal employees have set up nearly 300 bird feeders throughout the parks, squares, and forests of Kyiv to nourish the birds during the winter season.

"Kyivzelenbud" municipal enterprise reports this.

What is the problem?

It should be noted that about 50 species of local and migratory birds winter in Kyiv.

"Some of them are rare. Birds are an important part of the city's ecosystem. Therefore, they need to be fed during difficult weather conditions," the municipal enterprise emphasized.

What is the solution?

As noted by the capital's municipal workers, the assistance is crucial for small insectivorous birds who are most vulnerable to the cold and limited food availability.

Among them are sparrows, tits, siskins, woodpeckers, greenfinch, jays, wagtails, etc.

How does it work?

"All of the bird feeders are constructed from plain wood and do not feature any extra embellishments or vibrant coloring that may frighten birds. Each feeder is also equipped with a QR code that, when scanned, will direct you to information on the best types of food to use and the most optimal times to feed our feathered friends," Yurii Bakhmat, General Director of the "Kyivzelenbud" Joint Stock Company, said.

What do birds need to survive the winter months?

  • Whole grains: wheat, barley, oats, millet, and sorghum.
  • Seeds: sunflower and pumpkin that are unroasted and unsalted.
  • Fresh, unsalted lard.

According to "Kyivzelenbud," birds can fend for themselves, and you can only assist them:

  • during extremely cold weather;
  •  when there is an ice layer on the snow;
  • or when there is icing.

For reference:

In Irpin, a one-of-a-kind cat park will open in the Stoianka microdistrict. It will serve as a large shelter for rescued animals.

It is worth mentioning that the Lviv Home for Rescued Animals recently released its own app. Rubryka has shared details on how individuals can show their support for these furry creatures by adopting them through the app.
