This statement was made in a post on social media platform, Truth Social.
In his address, Trump also commented on the fall of Syrian dictator Bashar Assad's regime and Assad's subsequent flight. He attributed this development to Russia shifting its focus away from Syria and towards the war in Ukraine, which he described as a significant burden for Moscow.
"There was no reason for Russia to be there in the first place. They lost all interest in Syria because of Ukraine, where close to 600,000 Russian soldiers lay wounded or dead, in a war that should never have started, and could go on forever," Trump wrote.
According to Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukraine are reportedly willing to reach a peace agreement to end the conflict. He urged both sides to act immediately to seize this opportunity.
Trump reiterated his call for an "immediate ceasefire" and negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, highlighting the devastating human toll of the war.
"Too many lives are being so needlessly wasted, too many families destroyed, and if it keeps going, it can turn into something much bigger, and far worse. I know Vladimir well [Putin – ed.]. This is his time to act. China can help. The World is waiting!" he added.
What is known about the meeting between Zelensky and Trump
On December 7, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky traveled to Paris to attend the opening ceremony of Notre Dame Cathedral, which is being restored after a devastating fire. The event was attended by heads of state and government from approximately 40 countries.
During his visit, Zelensky met with newly elected US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron. After the talks, Zelensky stated that all participants expressed a shared desire for the war in Ukraine to end as soon as possible and in a fair manner.
In addition, Zelensky and Trump had previously spoken on November 7. Following that conversation, Zelensky reported that both sides had agreed to strengthen cooperation.
According to media reports, the 25-minute discussion included a reaffirmation from Trump that he would not cease supporting Ukraine. Notably, American billionaire Elon Musk also participated in the conversation.
Zelensky expressed optimism about his relationship with Trump, noting that their discussions had been constructive. He emphasized that the Ukrainian side had successfully presented its vision for peace in a well-reasoned manner, fostering mutual understanding between the two leaders.
