Most EU citizens continue to support Ukraine – Eurobarometer

Most citizens in European Union countries have a strong level of trust in European institutions. They also back the EU's efforts to provide Ukraine with humanitarian, economic, financial, and military aid.

A published study by the European agency Eurobarometer evidenced that.

"Before the fact of Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, almost nine out of ten Europeans (87%) agree with the provision of humanitarian assistance to people affected by this war. 71 percent of EU citizens support sanctions against the Russian authorities, companies, and individuals, and another 68% agree with providing financial assistance to Ukraine.

Six out of ten Europeans support granting Ukraine the status of a candidate country, and 58% agree with EU financing for the purchase and delivery of military equipment to Ukraine," the report says.

At the same time, a significant number of Europeans (31%) perceive the Russian war against Ukraine as the biggest problem at the EU level among the 15 items on the list of concerns, ahead of the closest following items, such as migration problems (28%) and the international situation (22%).

76% of European respondents agree that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is a threat to the security of the EU.

Europeans who took part in the survey named security and defense as the main priority for the EU's activities in the medium term (33%), followed by:

• migration (29%),
• economy (28%),
• climate and environmental protection (28%),
• health care (27%).

At the same time, 44% of European citizens believe that ensuring peace and stability will have the most significant positive effect on their lives shortly.

The Eurobarometer data also showed the highest level of trust among Europeans in the European Union since 2007 (51%). Most of these people are aged 15-24 (59%).

51% of respondents expressed trust in the European Commission, the highest figure in the past 17 years.

The Eurobarometer survey recorded the highest level of support for the single European currency – the euro – ever:

• in the EU as a whole, the level of such support reaches 71%,
• and in the Eurozone, it is even higher – 81%.

At the same time, almost half of Europeans (49%) are convinced that the economic situation in Europe will remain stable over the next 12 months.

The Eurobarometer survey mentioned above was carried out in person from October 10 to November 5, 2024, in all 27 EU Member States, with 26,525 participants.
