Food security summit participants pledge $44 million for Grain from Ukraine

On the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holodomors, Kyiv hosted the Third International Summit on Food Security, during which participating nations committed to further financing Ukraine's Grain from Ukraine initiative. Approximately $44 million has been allocated to support this program.

Rubryka reports this, citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

The summit focused on creating sustainable food systems and improving the health of future generations, particularly through school feeding reforms. Ukraine offered to share its expertise and resources in this area.

As part of the event, the achievements of the Grain from Ukraine program were highlighted. To date, Ukraine has delivered over 286,000 tons of food aid to vulnerable populations in Africa.

  • Support vulnerable populations;
  • Promote sustainable agricultural development;
  • Invest in the health of future generations.

Addressing Russia's aggression and its impact

  • The summit strongly condemned Russia's continued attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure and granaries, which hinder grain supplies and threaten millions worldwide.
  • The importance of restoring Ukraine's agricultural sector was underscored as a cornerstone of global food security.

"A separate topic of the event was the ongoing Russian aggression, which has caused significant losses to the agricultural sector of Ukraine and significantly affected the global food market," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized.

Following the summit, participating nations pledged continued financial support for the Grain from Ukraine program, with commitments totaling approximately $44 million.

"The 3rd International Food Security Summit highlighted the critical need for global unity to combat hunger, create sustainable food systems, and prevent the weaponization of food," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized.

The Importance of the Summit and the Grain from Ukraine Initiative

The Grain from Ukraine initiative, launched in 2022 by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has become a cornerstone in aiding countries affected by hunger.

  • The first summit in 2022 marked the beginning of efforts to combat global hunger.
  • The second summit in 2023 focused on maintaining uninterrupted grain exports from Ukraine.
  • The third summit, held in 2024, strengthened international cooperation and secured additional resources to address the global food crisis.

Traditionally held in Kyiv at the end of November, this year's event continued to build on its mission of addressing food insecurity worldwide.

According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the summit serves as a vital platform for fostering international collaboration on food aid and exploring solutions to global food security challenges.

Despite the ongoing war, Zelensky highlighted that Ukraine continues to hold a leading position in ensuring global food security.
