Zelensky shared these views during an interview with Ukrainian Radio.
Key points from Zelensky's statement
1. Ukraine's strength as a prerequisite for talks
Zelensky underscored that Ukraine must maintain strength both militarily and diplomatically to ensure successful negotiations. A weak stance, he said, would lead to failure from the outset.
"Ukraine cannot face the Russian Federation alone without strength. Negotiating with a murderer like Putin from a position of weakness guarantees failure. This is not a path to a just peace—there's no point in such negotiations," Zelensky stated.
2. Upholding values and justice
The President emphasized that mediators in the negotiations must uphold international law and recognize Russia's aggression. He dismissed neutrality as unacceptable.
3. The role of the United States
Zelensky expressed hope that the US would continue supporting Ukraine, particularly by maintaining Russia's designation as an aggressor. He highlighted the importance of America's clear stance for any negotiation framework.
"Trump's position and America's support for Ukraine are crucial. Neutrality doesn't work when international law is violated. The US must uphold Ukraine's stance that Russia is an aggressor. This is fundamental to any negotiation and must include elements of our victory plan," Zelensky stressed.
Trump's ambiguous position on Ukraine
The stance of Republican Donald Trump and his team regarding Ukraine remains unclear. During his campaign, Trump repeatedly claimed he could "end the war" if re-elected but offered no specific details.
He stated he could resolve the conflict within 24 hours, citing his relationships with both Zelensky and Russian leader Vladimir Putin. However, Trump also threatened to halt financial aid to Ukraine and withdraw US involvement in the war.
During a debate with Joe Biden, Trump labeled Putin's demands—Ukraine's withdrawal from occupied regions and its refusal to join NATO—as "unacceptable."
Currently, Trump has yet to present a concrete plan to end the war. Media reports suggest that some advisors propose barring Ukraine from joining NATO for 20 years while continuing US arms support. A proposed demilitarized zone of over 1,200 km between Russia and Ukraine has also been discussed.
On November 7, Trump spoke with Zelensky, during which they agreed to strengthen cooperation. According to reports, during the 25-minute conversation, Trump reassured Zelenskyy of continued U.S. support. American billionaire Elon Musk also participated in the call.
