On the morning of November 11, Russian military forces bombarded Kurakhove in the Donetsk region. This likely caused significant damage to the Terniv dam of the Kurakhiv reservoir, resulting in flooding of nearby populated areas towards Bahatyr.

News of Donbas and "Suspilne Donbas" reported that.

According to "Donbas News" sources, the water level in the Vovcha River has already increased by 1 meter. This rise has been documented in the villages that are situated along the river's path.

Depending on the degree of damage to the dam, there is a risk of partial flooding of settlements located downstream of the Vovcha River, in particular, villages:

  • Stari Terny,
  • Ulakly,
  • Konstantynopol,
  • Andriivka,
  • Oleksiivka,
  • Bahatyr,
  • Zelenyi Kut,
  • Novoukrainka,
  • a number of settlements in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

"We know that water is flowing through the villages located near the Terniv dam. We cannot confirm the nature of the damage and the criticality. We cannot inspect the dam due to constant shelling as of now," Roman Padun, the head of the Kurakhove City Military Administration, told Suspilne.

According to him, there is data that the water is approaching the settlements of the Velykonovosilkivska community.

"We've received word from other Velykonovosilkivska settlements that water is indeed flowing there, indicating that the dam may have sustained damage as a result of the sluices being opened," Padun added.

They note that active fighting on the Pokrovsk and Kurakhove fronts complicates the inspection of the strike site.

"The roads remain usable, but with certain nuances, the movement of armored vehicles on the dirt roads around these points is, of course, limited," the volunteer of the 24th Separate Assault Brigade "Aidar" Stanislav "Osmán" Buniatov said, according to the Eastern Variant.

According to a report from Vadym Filashkin, the head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, as of 4:00 p.m., it was determined that the river level in the Velykonovosilkivska community had increased by 1.2 meters.

"No flooding of houses has been recorded so far! We continue to monitor the water level in the river and are ready for any developments. I am keeping the situation under personal control. In case of significant changes, I will inform you additionally," he emphasized.

For reference:

Following the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP dam by Russian forces on June 6, 180 towns in the Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, and Mykolaiv regions were left in a state of emergency, affecting nearly 900,000 residents.

As a result of the destruction by the Russian invaders of the Kakhovka HPP, which happened on June 6, 31 people died in the territory controlled by the Ukrainian government.

The Cabinet of Ministers and the UN estimate the damages from the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP at more than 11 billion dollars. The largest direct damages were caused to the energy and housing sectors.

It's important to note that due to the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric plant and floods on the left bank of the Kherson region, hundreds of lives were lost, far surpassing the number reported by the Russian-controlled "government."

Rubryka has gathered arguments both in favor and against restoring the reservoir demolished by the Russian forces. To learn more, check out our article: "Is it necessary to restore the Kakhovka reservoir: pros and cons."
