Solutions from Ukraine: Lviv cafes launch empowering breast-shaped dessert to raise awareness for World Breast Cancer Month

What is the problem?

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women worldwide and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. It is a serious health concern that affects not only the individuals diagnosed with the disease but also their families, friends, and communities. This is why it is crucial to raise awareness about women's breast cancer issues.

The first reason for raising awareness is to encourage women to take preventive measures. Early detection is key to the successful treatment of breast cancer. Educating women about the importance of self-exams, regular clinical checkups, and mammograms can increase the chances of early detection and improve survival rates.

Raising awareness also helps in breaking down the stigma and fear associated with breast cancer. Many women are hesitant to talk about their breast health or seek medical help due to societal and cultural barriers. Creating an open and supportive environment can empower women to speak about their concerns and seek help without feeling judged.

What is the solution?

Caferynok is unveiling a special new dessert in the shape of a breast with a clearly visible scar.

The dessert is called "Pink October." It features a shortbread crust with layers of Pan de Jeune sponge cake, raspberry mousse, and a raspberry glaze. To top it off, there are small nipples.

"If you pay attention to this dark segment, it's a small allusion to the dissection that remains after the operation," Yefym Kravchenko, pastry chef of Caferynok, said.

One can purchase this dessert until October 30. Additionally, 40% of "Pink October" proceeds will be donated to the Inspiration Family support fund for adults with cancer. The goal for this year is to raise 2.5 million hryvnias to help women with cancer access necessary medications not covered by the government.

It's important to mention that October is recognized as breast cancer awareness month. If breast cancer is detected at stage I, it has a 95% cure rate in women, and at stage II, it has an 80% cure rate. Unfortunately, Ukrainian society harbors many fears and misconceptions surrounding this diagnosis, leading to widespread ignorance.
