For the third month, Ukraine's Armed Forces have been carrying out offensive operations in Russia's Kursk region. While no significant advances were recorded over the past day, Russian forces have been unable to push Ukrainian troops back to the border.

According to the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), as reported by Rubryka, Ukrainian forces continued ground attacks in the Glushkovsky district on October 5, though they "did not make confirmed advances." Ukrainian troops are actively operating west of their main salient in the Kursk region, advancing in multiple directions.

Russian pro-war bloggers claimed that Russian forces had recaptured the village of Medvezhye, but ISW refuted this, stating there is no confirmation of such a development.

Both sides continue alternating attacks and counterattacks. Recently, Ukrainian forces attacked Russian positions southwest of Glushkovo in the Veseloye and Novy Put areas, and southeast near Medvezhye.

The Russian 83rd Separate Guards Airborne Brigade is reportedly operating in the Glushkovo district, with units of the 106th Guards Infantry Division, 56th Infantry Regiment, and 1427th Motorized Rifle Regiment seen near Medvezhye.

ISW noted that Russian troops, up to platoon strength, advanced southeast of Obukhovka in the Korenevo district during a mechanized attack. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces attacked southeast of Korenevo toward Lyubimovka and Obukhivka; north of Sudzha toward Kamyshevka; and southeast near Plehovo.

In the Obukhovka region, Russia's 155th Marine Brigade of the Pacific Fleet, previously involved in fighting in Ukraine, is resisting Ukrainian forces.

Although Ukraine's progress in the Kursk region remains moderate, intense fighting continues as both sides seek to seize key positions without gaining a decisive advantage.

Battles in the Kursk region

Ukraine's Armed Forces achieved a morale-boosting tactical victory on August 6, capturing around 1,200 square kilometers of Russian territory, 594 enemy soldiers, and gaining control of over 100 settlements after a surprise attack.

On September 14, Ukrainian forces advanced further in the Glushkovsky district, capturing several villages south of Tyotkino and north of Sudzha.

President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that holding Russian territory is a key part of Ukraine's plan to win the war. He noted on September 13 that Russian troops began "rapid offensive actions" but achieved little success.

On September 19, Zelensky announced that approximately 40,000 Russian troops had been diverted to the Kursk area, thanks to the Ukrainian Armed Forces' operations, which are significantly impacting the overall front-line situation.

By the end of September, soldiers from Ukraine's 95th Separate Assault Brigade had breached a section of the Russian border in the Kursk region.
