Switzerland has expressed support for the Sino-Brazilian initiative to end the war in Ukraine, despite the fact that it does not explicitly reference the UN Charter or mention Ukraine's territorial integrity.

Nicolas Bideau, a representative of Switzerland's Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA), announced the country's support, according to Blick, as reported by Rubryka.

On Friday, a representative of the EDA told the Keystone-SDA agency that Switzerland backs the initiative because it promotes a ceasefire and calls for a political resolution to the conflict.

When the Sino-Brazilian initiative was published, Switzerland stressed the importance of referencing the UN Charter, which was notably absent. However, according to a representative from the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA), the Chinese Foreign Minister highlighted the significance of the UN Charter during a session at the UN Security Council this week. For Switzerland's foreign policy department, this peace initiative aligns with the principles of the UN Charter.

As reported by Le Temps, the US and European countries do not support the China-Brazil peace initiative, interpreting the lack of reference to the UN Charter as tacit approval of Moscow's strategy.

Additionally, Bideau stated that Switzerland demonstrated its ability to foster dialogue between the Global North and South during the Bürgenstock conference. Bideau emphasized that Switzerland supports a peace process grounded in specific proposals.

In this context, the EDA representative noted that Canada, whose Prime Minister attended the summit in Switzerland in June, will host the next conference in Ottawa in October. This upcoming meeting will address humanitarian concerns such as prisoners, child abductions, civilian abductions, and adherence to the Geneva Conventions.
