Russia kills 97 Ukrainian rescuers since beginning of its full-scale war

Since February 24, 2022, 97 employees of Ukraine's State Emergency Service have lost their lives in the ongoing war with Russia.

In a comment to Ukrinform, press officer of the State Emergency Service Oleksandr Khorunzhy reported this.

"Ninety-seven workers died, 395 were injured," he said.

It is worth mentioning that Ukraine observes Rescuer's Day on September 17 a holiday honoring the brave individuals who continuously protect people's safety. President Volodymyr Zelensky shared a video showcasing the challenging daily tasks of those saving lives and addressing emergencies amid a full-scale war.

The General Staff of Ukraine's armed forces acknowledged and commended the efforts of all rescuers involved in responding to emergencies during the war.

  • Every day, Ukrainian firefighters and rescuers bravely work to address the consequences of Russian terrorist attacks, saving Ukrainians from the wreckage and fires. Unfortunately, Russian invaders often intentionally target Ukrainian rescuers with repeat missile strikes.
  • The State Emergency Service's sappers play a critical role in demining liberated Ukrainian villages and cities despite facing enemy fire.

  • Furthermore, Ukrainian dog handlers have been vital in locating and rescuing individuals trapped under rubble. They also search for hidden Russian weapons and explosives.

  • In addition, psychologists of the State Service for Emergency Situations save affected Ukrainians from stress and mental trauma.

For reference:

The practice of honoring rescuers on this day was initiated in 2008 by President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko.

It was officially implemented on September 12 of that year in support of a joint effort by the public and the Ukrainian Ministry of Emergency Situations to recognize the bravery and efforts of those who responded to the Chornobyl disaster.

On Rescuer's Day, Ukrainians honor and recognize those who serve in:

    • emergency and rescue services,
    • civil protection,
    • fire protection,
    • and other specialized groups,
    • as well as citizens who have played a vital role in responding to man-made and natural disasters and those who have devoted their efforts to protecting the lives and well-being of others.
