EU condemns illegitimate "elections" in annexed Crimea
The European Union strongly denounces and refuses to acknowledge the so-called "elections" held for the illegitimate parliament in Crimea, which is currently under temporary occupation, reaffirming that the peninsula remains an integral part of Ukraine.
The European Service of Foreign Affairs reported this.
The department made it clear that holding these pseudo-elections is yet another violation of international law, the UN Charter, and Ukraine's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.
The leaders of the Russian Federation and those in charge of organizing this "voting" will be held accountable and face the consequences.
"More than a decade after Russia's invasion and attempted illegal annexation of Crimea, the EU reiterates its position: Crimea is Ukraine. Referring to the UN General Assembly Resolution of 27 March 2014, we call on Russia to cease its efforts to undermine Ukraine's national unity and territorial integrity," the statement reads.
They also called on Russia to stop its aggression and withdraw its troops from Ukraine.
For reference:
On September 6–8, 2024, the Russian Federation will hold its annual "single voting day," which will entail local elections for various administrative positions in different regions.
According to reports, about 33% of the people living on the peninsula voted in the election for deputies to the parliament under Russian control and for city and village councils in temporarily occupied Crimea.
Denys Chystikov, the deputy permanent representative of the president in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, stated to Suspilne. Krym that the occupying authorities are requesting heads of budget organizations to report the number of employees who visited "polling stations."
Meanwhile, a Yevpatoria resident informed reporters that the city's polling stations were nearly deserted. In Sevastopol, very few people showed up to vote despite the promotion, according to a resident.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the so-called "elections" in Russia have devolved into a mockery and do not represent the will of the people. They also stressed that these elections hold no legitimacy in the occupied Ukrainian Crimea.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs made it clear that anyone participating in the planning and execution of the so-called "elections" in the occupied areas of Ukraine will face legal consequences under Ukraine's current laws.
