New Lviv institution to chronicle Ukrainian war experience
A new cultural and research institution recently opened in Lviv. Its primary focus will be documenting the Ukrainian war experience.
The city council reported that.
The Institute of Documentation and Interaction (INDEX) was inaugurated in the city on September 7.
The institute was launched thanks to the efforts of distinguished historian and professor Timothy Snyder, who was joined at the grand opening by esteemed Ukrainian writer, musician, and soldier Serhii Zhadan.
INDEX: the Institute for Documentation and Interaction is a project launched by the Institute of Humanities in Vienna (IWM). Over the past decade, IWM has strived to amplify the voices of Ukrainians globally and record their wartime experiences through two initiatives: Ukraine in European Dialogue and Documenting Ukraine.
As the institution's leaders mentioned at the opening, it's time to move beyond temporary projects and focus on recording reality for the future.
Establishing INDEX, a Ukrainian intellectual and cultural institution, is not just a reaction to an ongoing war but also a pledge for a lasting and dedicated collaboration.
It will document the Russian war against Ukraine and promote intellectual interaction between Ukraine and the outside world.
The institute began with a brief lecture by Timothy Snyder emphasizing the significance of documenting the Ukrainian war experience.
Later, Timothy Snyder and Serhii Zhadan spoke about their works, with Myroslava Barchuk, a journalist and vice-president of the Ukrainian PEN, moderating the discussion. Serhii Zhadan shared excerpts from his prose writing to wrap up the event.
The opening was attended by:
- many guests from abroad,
- Ukrainian journalists,
- cultural figures,
- professors,
- publishers, etc.
Lviv Mayor Andrii Sadovyi also participated in the event.

It should be noted that Sean Penn's charity fund in Ukraine, CORE, is joining the "I will take care of a building" campaign in Lviv to help with rebuilding efforts in response to Russian aggression.
