The Ministry of Defense codified and approved the domestic armored personnel carrier "Khorunzhy" for Ukraine's armed forces.

The press center of the Ministry of Defense reports this.

What is the problem?

As tensions continue to escalate between Ukraine and Russia, it is more crucial than ever for Ukraine to develop its own military equipment and weapons, particularly armored fighting vehicles. In the face of Russian aggression and ongoing war, Ukraine should prioritize the development of its own military capabilities to increase its defense capabilities and protect its sovereignty.

  • One primary reason for Ukraine to develop its own military equipment and weapons is to ensure self-reliance and autonomy. This would reduce Ukraine's dependence on other countries for its defense capabilities, enabling Ukraine to have greater control over its military operations and enhance its national security.
  • Secondly, it would improve effectiveness and suitability for local conditions. Russian full-scale war has highlighted the need for military equipment and weapons specifically designed and adapted to Ukraine's unique terrain, climate, and operational needs. By developing its own armored fighting vehicles and other military equipment, Ukraine could tailor these resources to its specific requirements, making them more effective in combat and better suited to the local environment. This would give Ukraine a strategic advantage and bolster its defense capabilities against Russian aggression.
  • Moreover, developing its own military equipment and weapons would provide a significant boost to Ukraine's economy.

What is the solution?

The Ministry of Defense has officially recognized and sanctioned the domestic armored personnel carrier, "Khorunzhy," for use by Ukraine's armed forces. This new vehicle is an extensively modernized version of the Soviet BTR-60 armored personnel carrier.

How does it work?

The body is crafted from top-grade Finnish steel, enhancing the vehicle's ballistic protection without adding extra weight.

Additionally, the vehicle's body is shielded along the perimeter to withstand 7.62 mm bullets with a steel core. The frontal armor can withstand shots from a high-caliber machine gun at a range of 10 meters.

The hull design and unique anti-mine seats safeguard the landing party from the effects of detonating explosive devices equivalent to 6 kg of TNT.

The armored personnel carrier is significantly more powerful than the BTR60 due to its 330-horsepower diesel engine, which exceeds the two 90-horsepower gasoline engines in front of its hull.

It can reach a speed of over 80 km/h, and its fuel tanks can cover a distance of over 500 kilometers.

The armored vehicle's body underwent a significant overhaul, resulting in enhanced ergonomics and landing efficiency through the rear.

The new armored personnel carrier is equipped with:

  • modern electronics,
  • surveillance cameras,
  • air conditioning system,
  • autonomous generator allows the armored vehicle to function with the engine turned off.

The new Ukrainian armored personnel carrier is equipped with a combat module that can be armed with either a 14.5 mm machine gun or a 30×113 mm cannon.

The "Khorunzhy" armored personnel carrier has six different variations that can be manufactured:

  • a linear armored personnel carrier,
  • a personnel carrier,
  • a medical evacuation vehicle,
  • a repair and evacuation vehicle,
  • a command staff vehicle,
  • and a self-propelled mortar machine.

For reference:

It should be noted that the Ministry of Defense has authorized the use of the Ukrainian unmanned transporter BoarTAC.

It was also announced that the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has implemented and activated the tower module for American-produced M113 armored personnel carriers. Ukrainian factories are also currently working on enhancing firepower and fortifying various versions of armored personnel carriers against potential attacks by enemy drones.

As Rubryka previously reported, Ukraine's armed forces need a lot of weapons and military equipment. Since the beginning of the large-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has prepared several proposals to optimize organizational processes and improve the regulatory framework.
