Satellites capture fires after drone attack at Volgograd airfield, Russia
Drones attacked the Marinovka military airfield in Russia's Volgograd region on the evening of August 22. Satellite images show that the airport was set ablaze.
The monitoring groups "Krym. Realii" and Astra report this.
Earlier, there were reports of explosions in the Russian city of Kalach-on–Don, located in the Volgograd region. It was believed that this was caused by an attack involving drones and the response of air defense forces. Subsequently, a fire broke out at the airport.
Through NASA satellites, three ignition sources were recorded on the territory of the airfield.
- One of them is located on a site where, according to satellite images, planes are parked.
- Another one is further north, on the territory where, in particular, the reservoirs are located.
- Another fire broke out on the territory where the airfield taxiway passes.
According to the monitoring group, NASA images show several fires erupted on the airfield's grounds on August 22.
Satellite images of the air base from August 19 show almost thirty military planes and eight trucks.
According to the region governor, Andrey Bocharov, the attack on Marinovka was repulsed, and most of the drones were destroyed.
"As a result of the fall of the UAV, a fire broke out on the territory of the Ministry of Defense facility," Bocharov said.
Based on the available data, the 2nd separate reconnaissance aviation squadron (military unit 77978) of the 4th Air Force and Air Defense Command is currently equipped with the Su-24MR front-line reconnaissance aircraft. This squadron was established on January 1, 2014, from the aviation squadron of the 6970th Air Base, a part of the 7th Brigade of the Aerospace Defense Forces.
OSINT researchers claim that Su-34 fighters could also be based there.
At the same time, it is reported that the Volgograd airport is currently closed due to an attack on the regional military airfield.
For reference:
It should be noted that Ukrainian kamikaze drones attacked the Russian airfield Savasleyka on August 16. Three Russian planes were destroyed there.
On the night of August 14, Russia was massively attacked by drones. Even though the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported on the so-called "destruction" of 117 drones in eight regions of the aggressor country, the so-called Russian military commanders wrote about three Russian airfields that were under attack.
Then, the Voronezh, Kursk, Savasleyka, and Borysoglebsk airfields came under attack.
Last week, the Ukrainian Defense Forces launched another strike on crucial enemy targets in Russia. The Russian Lypetsk airfield was particularly impacted, causing it to catch fire.
In early August, the Defense Forces managed to destroy anti-aircraft missiles and fighters at the Morozovsk airfield. Around the same time, the General Staff confirmed that Ukraine's armed forces had launched a drone attack on the airport near Rostov and successfully struck an ammunition warehouse.
