Massive DDoS attack shuts down messengers and Internet services across Russia

On Wednesday, August 21, Telegram, WhatsApp, and Skype messenger services were widely disrupted in Russia. Additionally, difficulties were reported in accessing several other services.

The Telegram application received the most complaints from users in Russia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. According to Downdetector, thousands of issues have been reported with the messenger.

In addition to Telegram, there are issues accessing popular services like WhatsApp, Skype, Wikipedia, the Steam gaming platform, Discord, Yandex, VKontakte, Twitch, State Services, and the AppStore. Additionally, the websites of major Russian banks and mobile operators are experiencing disruptions.

Russia's "RIA Novosti" reported that the failure was allegedly related to a DDoS attack on telecommunications operators, which "has already been repelled."

Petro Andriushchenko, an adviser to the mayor of Mariupol, reported that the Russian Federation's occupation of Ukrainian territories, including Mariupol and Berdiansk, also caused disruptions in those areas.

"In the occupied territories, the Internet is also a problem. There is definitely no connection in Mariupol, Berdiansk, and Primorsk. I don't even know how to react. That's why it's just a fact," he wrote on Telegram.
