United to win: Netherlands to deliver 51 mobile air defense radars to Ukraine by year's end
By the end of 2024, the Netherlands will purchase and transfer to Ukraine 51 mobile air defense radars manufactured by Robin Radar Systems.
The Minister of Defense of the Netherlands, Ruben Brekelmans, and the Ministry of Defense's press service report this.
What is the problem?
Modern warfare has increased the use of advanced technology, such as drones.
In recent years, the ongoing Russian war against Ukraine has seen a spike in the use of Russian drones to attack civilian infrastructure, making the need for modern air defense systems and radars more critical than ever.
Drones can fly at low altitudes and evade traditional air defense systems, making them a difficult target to detect and intercept. This puts critical infrastructures, such as power plants, water facilities, and communication networks, at risk of being targeted and disrupted.
What is the solution?
By the end of 2024, the Netherlands will buy and deliver 51 mobile air defense radars from Robin Radar Systems to Ukraine.
"Russia is unscrupulously attacking with drones. Reliable air defense is of vital importance. That is why we are purchasing 51 mobile radars for Ukraine. The supplier of these radars is the Dutch company Robin Radar Systems. They will be in Ukraine this year," Ruben Brekelmans, Dutch defense minister, wrote.
How does it work?
As noted by the Ministry of Defense of the Netherlands, the systems can detect small drones and distinguish them from birds. Radars perform their work on a mobile platform, a unique feature.
Radars monitor the environment for the presence of drones, even at high speeds.
Since the detection system is mobile, it is more difficult for the enemy to find the radar and, therefore, more difficult to neutralize. This makes it possible to detect enemy drones and then disable them continuously.
