Ukraine is introducing a new master's program called "Unmanned Aerial Vehicles," which offers opportunities for individuals aspiring to excel in modern technologies for designing and operating drones. This program, in collaboration with the Kyiv School of Economics and sponsored by the Ministry of Digital Transformation, aims to produce skilled drone engineers.

The Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, Mykhailo Fedorov, and the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) reported this.

What is the problem?

As noted by Fedorov, the civilian and military drone fields are up-and-coming in today's market.

With the start of a full-scale war in Ukraine, the drone industry has seen substantial growth, with over 500 companies currently involved. This highlights the crucial need for well-trained professionals to drive the industry forward.

What is the solution?

That is why the Ministry of Digital Transformation, together with the Kyiv School of Economics, is launching a master's program to train engineers in the development of drones.

"In response to the growing interest in aviation technology and the need for qualified specialists in Ukraine, the innovative master's program "Unmanned aerial vehicles" was developed," KSE noted.

How does it work?

The program involves participation from companies in the Brave1 cluster that are deeply involved in developing cutting-edge defense innovations for the Defense Forces. These companies will contribute their expertise and knowledge to upcoming students.

The program covers all aspects of drone development, with students studying a wide range of disciplines including:

  • aerodynamics,
  • automatic control,
  • navigation systems,
  • unmanned systems and others.

They also have the opportunity to conduct practical classes using modern simulators and real UAVs.

Furthermore, throughout the course, students will gain proficiency in:

  • Creating unique UAV designs using modern manufacturing technologies.
  • Executing intricate diagnostic and quality control procedures through interactive programming, utilizing ground infrastructures and operational complexes.
  • Designing and implementing cutting-edge hardware solutions for UAVs.
  • Applying advanced knowledge and innovative techniques to enhance the structural design of UAVs and optimize reliability and survivability factors.
  • Performing advanced diagnostic tests, utilizing modern methods of interactive programming and data analysis to prepare UAVs for certification and uphold safety standards.
  • Developing sophisticated UAV equipment systems by integrating state-of-the-art communication and navigation systems.

The program primarily uses Ukrainian in its teaching, although most of its literature is in English as it focuses on current academic developments.

The recommended English level is B1. Students start studying English at the beginning of their program to reach the required level for mastering the content.

The online classes are held thrice weekly from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM. The schedule for the offline classes varies, and they take place on weekdays, evenings, and Saturdays during the day. The venue is only disclosed to students for security purposes.

Applications for admission are accepted from bachelors, masters, and specialists of all specialties until August 22.

The Kyiv School of Economics will also issue training grants for ten military personnel. Applications can be submitted through the program's official website by clicking on the application link.

For reference:

As of early 2024, the Ministry of Defense in Ukraine has integrated and utilized approximately 70 newer types of ammunition for unmanned aerial vehicles.

Furthermore, the German company HIGHCAT is testing its drones in Ukraine. They are controlled using coils equipped with optical fiber, which enables the drone to function effectively amidst strong electronic interference.
