Ukraine in talks with Great Britain to solidify stronger partnership agreement

Ukraine held the first round of negotiations with Great Britain to conclude a bilateral agreement on the transition to a stronger and deeper partnership.

The Office of the President of Ukraine reports this.

The head of the Office of the President, Andriy Yermak, headed the Ukrainian delegation.

"We are grateful to your people, government, and parliament for the assistance and leadership we have experienced since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion. Great Britain was the first to sign a security agreement with Ukraine, and now it is the first to work on a historic document on a 100-year partnership. We hope the negotiations will be successful so that this historic document will soon be signed by the President of Ukraine and the Prime Minister of Great Britain," Andriy Yermak said.

The head of the presidential office emphasized that Ukraine needs the support of Great Britain to restore a just peace and prevent new aggression against Ukraine.

The future comprehensive long-term agreement will be based on the 2020 Agreement on Political Cooperation, Free Trade, and Strategic Partnership provisions and the 2024 Agreement on Security Cooperation between Ukraine and Great Britain.

"The new document should contain even more ambitious goals of our cooperation. We aim to establish unprecedented provisions in all spheres of mutual interest: from security to the economy, from energy to culture and art," Deputy Head of the Office of the President Ihor Zhovkva, who also took part in the negotiations, noted.

For reference:

As Rubryka previously reported, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky and the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, signed an agreement on security between Ukraine and Great Britain.

In particular, the agreement provides for:

  • defense and military cooperation,
  • maritime security,
  • cooperation in the field of defense industry,
  • protection of critical infrastructure,
  • political, economic, and humanitarian cooperation,
  • cooperation in the event of a future armed attack.

The main components of the security commitments provided to Ukraine by the United Kingdom in the agreement are:

  • provision of comprehensive assistance to Ukraine for the protection and restoration of territorial integrity in its internationally recognized borders, including the territorial sea and free economic (maritime) zone, reconstruction of the national economy, and protection of its citizens;
  • prevention and active deterrence and counteraction of any military escalation and/or new aggression on the part of the Russian Federation;
  • supporting Ukraine's future integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions, particularly by supporting Ukraine's reform plans and compatibility with NATO.

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, in turn, said that the agreement on Ukraine's security guarantees with Great Britain would become a reference option for other states.
