July was the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since October 2022 — UN

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine stated that in July of this year, the number of dead and wounded among the civilian population in Ukraine was the highest since October 2022.

This is stated in the organization's report, Rubryka writes.

The organization noted that in July, there was a continuation of the trend of increasing the number of casualties among civilians, which has been ongoing since March 2024.

At least 219 civilians were killed and 1,018 injured in July as a result of the attacks.

"The number of civilian casualties in July was the highest since October 2022, when 317 civilians were killed and 795 were injured. The highest number of casualties was recorded on July 8, when the Russian armed forces struck targets in Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih with precision missiles (Dnipropetrovsk region) and Kyiv region. In total, during the attacks on July 8, at least 43 civilians were killed, including five children, and 147 were injured, including seven children," the mission's report says.

The UN specified that the greatest number of casualties among civilians was caused when a rocket or fragments of a rocket shot down by anti-aircraft fire hit:

  • a residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kyiv (13 dead and 20 wounded),
  • business center in the Solomyanskyi district of Kyiv (6 dead and 10 injured),
  • medical center in the Dnipro district of Kyiv (9 dead and 5 wounded),
  • Okhmatdyt children's hospital in Kyiv (2 dead and 18 injured),
  • administrative buildings of the repair and mechanical plant in Kryvyi Rih (10 dead, 46 wounded).

In general, the vast majority of casualties among the civilian population (90%) and damage to educational and medical institutions (86%), as before, falls on the territory controlled by Ukraine.

In particular, the July 8 attack destroyed or damaged several medical facilities throughout Ukraine, including a rocket that hit the Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital, completely destroying the building of the toxicology department.

"A detailed assessment of the place where the rocket fell, eyewitness accounts and video footage, including those taken immediately before the rocket fell, indicate that it was a direct hit on the hospital complex, and not falling debris from the interception of the missile by the air defense system," the mission said.

It should be noted that the researchers of Conflict Armament Research (CAR) discovered that the missile with which Russia hit the Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital on July 8 was manufactured several weeks or even days before the attack.

We will remind you that, according to the UN data, at least 146 civilians died as a result of hostilities on the territory of Ukraine during June. Another 672 people were injured.

It was also reported that in the statement of the delegation of Ukraine to the OSCE, made by the first secretary of the permanent representation of Ukraine to international organizations in Vienna, Danylo Kubai, during the meeting of the Security Cooperation Forum, it is stated that only 3% of Russian missiles, drones and guided bombs hit military targets in Ukraine, while 97% are directed to strike civilian infrastructure.

The intensification of strikes by the Russian military on the territory of Ukraine this spring led to significant casualties among the civilian population and significant damage to civilian infrastructure.
