Ukraine has control over the Sudzha gas measuring station, which is situated approximately five miles (approximately 8 km) within the Russian Federation's territory.

A confidential source within President Volodymyr Zelensky's advisory team revealed this information to The Washington Post.

According to the publication's analysts, Kyiv may try to cut off Russia's gas supply to Europe to exert pressure.

On August 8, gas was still flowing through Sudzha, the only operating transit point for the pipeline, which provides Russian natural gas to Europe through Ukraine.

"On Thursday, gas was still flowing through Sudzha, the last operational shipping point for a pipeline that carries Russian natural gas to Europe via Ukraine. The station was unlikely to be used for leverage, the adviser said, because with the pipeline running through Ukraine anyway, Kyiv could have disrupted flows at any time.

Ukraine earns lucrative transit fees but has expressed a desire to cut off Russia's remaining energy business in Europe," the article reads.

It is also noted that the Russian National Guard has announced increased security around the Kursk nuclear power plant, located about 40 miles (about 65 km) northeast of Sudzha.

In his turn, the adviser to the President of Ukraine, Mykhailo Podolyak, suggested on the telethon air that any military actions on the territory of the Russian Federation could improve Ukraine's position during future negotiations with Russia on ending the war. He did not talk specifically about the Kursk region.

For reference:

On the morning of August 6, information appeared on Russian Telegram channels that Ukrainian defenders allegedly broke through the border and entered the territory of the Kursk region.

The authorities of the Kursk region decided to declare a state of emergency on August 7. The reason is the fighting in the area after the "breakthrough" of the border.

According to a new report by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukrainian troops could have advanced ten kilometers in the Kursk region. In their report, the experts state that the Armed Forces allegedly captured 45 square kilometers of territory in the Kursk region, in particular 11 settlements, including Nikolayevo-Daryino, Daryino and Sverdlykovo, and operate in Lyubimovka.

As of August 8, fighting has been going on for the third day in the Kursk region after the alleged "breakthrough" of the border. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation confirmed the Ukrainian military's advance in two districts of the Kursk region of Russia. It declared that it had transferred reserves to the border and shelled the Armed Forces from aviation. The network also reports that the fighting has reached the Korenevo, Kursk region village.

According to the Russian publication Agenstvo, the data suggests that the Ukrainian military has penetrated 20-80 km into the Kursk region and reached the route to Kurchatov, where the Kursk nuclear power plant is situated.

Currently, fighting is occurring in the Kursk region, just thirty kilometers away from the Kurchatov area, where the Kursk nuclear power plant is situated, and only fifteen kilometers away from Lgov, a major regional center with a population of 17 thousand Russians.

Additionally, according to Russian media reports, the Ukrainian military is allegedly constructing fortifications in the Kursk region following their breach of the border.

The Russian Railways announced that it has temporarily shut down the train stations at Sudzha, Korenove, and Psel in the Kursk region amidst ongoing hostilities. This move guarantees the safety of passengers. The authorities are conducting extra checks on the infrastructure and instructing the staff to secure smooth traffic flow in the area.
