In the first six months of 2024, a total of 250,972 people passed away, and 87,655 children were born in Ukraine. This marks a 9% decrease from the numbers in the same time frame in 2023.

The Opendatabot service's data evidence this.

Based on the given statistics, this year's birth rate has dropped by one and a half times in comparison to the period before the complete invasion. There were 87,655 births recorded, as opposed to 132,595 births in 2021.

The largest number of babies and deaths in Ukraine were in the Dnipropetrovsk region and Kyiv:

  • In Kyiv, the most newborns were registered – 9,695 children,
  • in Lviv region– 7,923,
  • in Dnipropetrovsk region – 6,962.

The fewest children were born in the frontline regions:

  • 221 children in the Kherson region,
  • 702 children in the Donetsk region.

No babies were registered in the Luhansk region for six months.

Right now, there are three deaths for every one newborn citizen. As analysts have observed, this ratio is a significant indicator of the demographic crisis.

"For comparison, in the years before 2018-2020, there were two deaths per child. 250,972 people died in Ukraine in the first half of 2024. This is 1.4 times less than in 2021, when 349,041 deaths were recorded. However, it is worth noting that 2021 was the peak year in terms of deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic," Opendatabot states.

At the same time, the highest number of deaths were recorded in:

  • Dnipropetrovsk region – 26,374,
  • Kharkiv region – 17,999,
  • and in Kyiv – 17,449.

The fewest are in the front-line regions: Kherson region – 2,334, Donetsk region – 5,753, and Chernivtsi region – 5,422 people.

Since 2013, the birth rate in Ukraine has been falling by 7% annually: the full-scale invasion of Russia caused the biggest crisis.

As previously reported, over 87,600 babies were born in Ukraine during the first half of this year.

In 2023, an average of 16,100 children were born every month in Ukraine. For comparison, in previous years, before the full-scale invasion, the number of newborns per month ranged from 21,000 to 23,000.

On the whole, Ukraine's birth rates have been decreasing since 2013 at a rate of approximately 7% per year. However, the ongoing conflict has caused a significant decrease in the number of new Ukrainian citizens, marking the most severe decline in the country's history. The previous sharp decline in birth rates can also be attributed to the war, with a decrease of up to 12% in 2015.

Ella Libanova, director of the Institute of Demography, believes that proper conditions for family development and life are necessary to increase the birth rate in Ukraine.

"Paradoxically, the birth rate is a network of kindergartens and preschools, improving the opportunities for raising children in out-of-school institutions. This is an opportunity for women and men to work and earn. The state should help with housing through mortgages and various loans—the formation of a new model of provision housing. Similarly, with rented housing, the rights of the tenant and the landlord must be properly protected," the professor explained.

For reference:

It should be noted that at the end of 2022, a catastrophic drop in the birth rate for 2023 was predicted. There are risks that the population of Ukraine will decrease to at least 35 million by 2030, according to the Ptoukha Institute for Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
