Kherson Art Museum identifies 121st painting looted by Russian occupiers

The Kherson Art Museum is still working on identifying the stolen artworks, and they have now added 121 paintings to the list of confirmed works. Among them, a painting by a Ukrainian landscape artist has been identified as stolen by the invaders.

The Kherson Art Museum reported that on Facebook.

In the picture snapped on April 1st, 2023 at the Central Museum of Tavrida during the fake signing of an agreement for storing stolen goods from Kherson in Crimea, and in the stories captured by the occupying channels in August and September 2023, there is a pastel by Ukrainian painter Heorhiy Cherniavskyi titled "Dalni Zelentsi Bay."

The Kherson museum staff also discovered that its inventory number was listed in one of the frames.

Heorhiy Cherniavskyi (1924-1981) was a People's Artist of Ukraine and a prominent figure of the Dnipro school of painting. He is recognized as one of the top 100 Ukrainian artists.

Even as a student, he showed his mastery of the Ukrainian landscape. Throughout his career, he rarely ventured into other genres.

The artist used to paint landscapes from various regions during his extensive travels throughout the USSR.

One of these is the piece that the invaders stole. It was written on emery paper in the north of Russia, specifically on the Kola Peninsula, back in 1970. However, despite his travels, Heorhiy Chernyavskyi's love for his homeland was never overshadowed, as his true passion lay in capturing the lyrical and poetic essence of Ukraine's nature.

The 121st piece of artwork stolen by Russian occupation authorities from the Kherson Art Museum in 2022 is "Dalni Zelentsi Bay."

The Kherson Art Museum recently discovered that another painting, "Old Crimea" by Emilia Honcharova, was taken during the Russian occupation.

Before that, Rubryka reported that the Kherson Art Museum had already identified 96 works of art that had been stolen by the Russians.

In particular, the work of Maria Schneider-Seniuk (born in 1936), "Kosari."

According to reports, as part of the "Stolen Art…" project, the painting "Portrait of a Girl in an Embroidered Dress," which had been stolen from Kherson by Russians, has been recreated.

Additionally, the Crimean occupation administration's department, responsible for overseeing historical and cultural artifacts on the peninsula, has instructed subordinate institutions to prepare valuable pieces for "evacuation."
