Over 90% of Ukrainians take pride in their citizenship – survey

The survey results show that 91.4% of Ukrainians expressed pride in their citizenship, a notable increase compared to previous years. Specifically, in 2000, only 62.4% felt proud, followed by 61.8% in 2010, 68.4% in 2015, and a significant increase to 94% in 2023.

The Razumkov Center reports this based on a sociological survey conducted from June 6 to 12.

Additionally, the survey revealed that: 

• 95.8% of those surveyed expressed pride or a positive sentiment towards the Ukrainian flag, 
• 96.5% towards the Ukrainian coat of arms, 
• and 90.4% towards the national anthem of Ukraine.

As for identification, 52.8% of respondents consider themselves primarily Ukrainians. Of them:

• 28% associate themselves with the settlement where they live,
• 13.1% – with the region,
• 0.1% – with Russia,
• 1.6% – with the Soviet Union,
• 2.6% – with Europe,
• and 1.2% could not decide on an answer.

Ethnic self-identification showed that:

• 94.7% consider themselves Ukrainians,
• 1.9% – Russians,
• 1.9% – other nationalities,
• 1.5% could not decide.

The respondents' cultural identity was distributed as follows:

• 76.2% attribute themselves to the Ukrainian cultural tradition,
• 14.4% – to the European level,
• 3.8% – to the Soviet,
• 0.5% – to Russian,
• 1.4% – to other traditions,
• 3.7% could not decide.

In terms of proficiency in the Ukrainian language:

• 69.5% of respondents reported being fluent,
• 27.1% have a basic understanding,
• 2.2% struggle with comprehension,
• and 0.5% do not understand at all.

Also, 70.5% of respondents reported that they communicate at home in Ukrainian, 17.8% – sometimes in Ukrainian and Russian, 11% – in Russian, and 0.5% – in another language.

The survey was conducted among 2,016 respondents aged 18 and over in all regions of Ukraine except temporarily occupied and active war zones. The error does not exceed 2.3%.

It should be noted that the number of Ukrainian citizens who are ready for territorial concessions to achieve peace as soon as possible has begun to increase since last May. However, they are a minority among those interviewed.
