European Parliament condemns Orbán's "peacemaking" efforts in resolution supporting Ukraine
On July 17, during the plenary session, the European Parliament approved a resolution in support of Ukraine by a majority of votes. The resolution specifically condemned the uncoordinated foreign policy actions of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
"European Pravda" reports this.
495 MEPs out of 679 who voted supported the resolution.
Therefore, they have reaffirmed their backing for Ukraine's "independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as recognized by the international community." Specifically, the resolution denounces Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's recent trip to Russia.
The document emphasizes that "during this visit, he did not represent the EU" and considers "this visit a flagrant violation of EU treaties and common foreign policy."
The majority of the European Parliament condemned Hungary's abuse of its presidency of the Council of the EU and called on it to lift the blockade of financing Ukraine from the European Peace Fund.
- The resolution calls for:
- continuation of military, financial, and other assistance to Ukraine,
- support for Ukraine's accession to the European Union,
- use of frozen Russian assets for the benefit of Ukraine.
It also separately condemns the Russian shelling of Okhmatdyt children's hospital and Russia's hybrid attacks against the EU.
In this regard, the European Parliament calls on the Council of the EU to "continue and expand its policy of sanctions against Russia and Belarus while monitoring, reviewing and improving its effectiveness and impact."
It should be added that the resolution in support of Ukraine became the first document adopted by the European Parliament after the June elections.
The European Commission previously decided to reduce the level of representation at the informal meetings of the EU Council during the Hungarian presidency to show dissatisfaction with Viktor Orbán's inconsistent foreign policy moves. Several member states took a similar step.
At the same time, the European Commission says that they cannot legally deprive Hungary of the EU Council presidency, but they can boycott it.
"There is no way to do that. However, we can boycott and openly show that we disagree with Mr. Orbán's policy. This is what we are doing now, and we are gradually preparing for the Polish presidency, which begins after the New Year," the vice-president of the European Commission for issues of values and transparency, Vera Yurova, stressed.
She emphasized that, despite his actions, Viktor Orbán will be unable to cause damage within the EU.
"The Hungarian presidency falls when the Council will not make any key decisions, as we are at the beginning of the legislative period, changes in mandates in institutions," the official said.
For reference:
It should be noted that the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, responded to the letter with Hungary's Prime Minister's "peaceful" plan and criticized Orbán for his self-proclaimed "peacemaking mission" regarding the war in Ukraine.
After a trip to Kyiv and talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky, Orbán unexpectedly visited Moscow and Beijing, then took part in the NATO summit in Washington last week, and also held talks with Trump in Florida.
